3991m – Turf
1 | The Grand Visir |
Unsuccessful spell hurdling since won on Flat over 2905m at Doncaster last year. Well beaten on return to Flat this month. Looks badly handicapped and has little chance.
2 | Snow Falcon |
High class chaser – won G2 chase last November. Showed good level of form when last ran on Flat in 2017 but now a nine-year-old (only one Ascot Stakes winner as old in last 20 years) and handicap mark higher than when last ran on Flat.
3 | Time To Study |
Not won since 2017, looks badly handicapped. Moved from Mark Johnston to Ian Williams this year and run disappointingly twice since. A no-hoper.
4 | Arctic Fire |
Ten-year-old top class hurdler. First run on Flat for five years when won small race over 2800m at Killarney last month. Be a romantic shock if won.
5 | Mengli Khan |
High class G1 winning hurdler and decent chaser has first run on Flat since 2016. Attractive handicap mark if Irish-trained six-year-old versatile enough to exploit it.
6 | Not Never |
Not run on Flat since 2016, when a fair handicapper, and won a small chase at Fontwell this month. A speculative participant.
7 | Percy Street |
Took brief break from hurdling to be well beaten at 100-1 in this race last year. Not run on Flat since, is on same handicap mark and needs a miracle to win.
8 | Coeur De Lion |
A proven stayer, 6th in this last year on good to firm going and in fine form recently, winning over 3727m at Chester last month. Still fairly handicapped but best on softer ground.
9 | Kerosin |
Heavily raced in recent years – run 23 times since start of 2018, winning two of those, including this month over 3200m at Navan. Likely to stay the trip but questionable if good enough.
10 | Jukebox Jive |
Last win was over hurdles in 2017. Usually well beaten since, including at Meydan. Not run since February. Looks a forlorn hope.
11 | Ulster |
Ex-Godolphin horse has thrived this year with Archie Watson, finishing 1st or 2nd in all five runs. Will probably stay the trip and is improving. A live chance.
12 | Cosmelli |
10 runs since last win, well beaten by Eden Rose over 3198m at Kempton in April and an unlikely winner.
13 | Mixboy |
Seven of this versatile nine-year-old’s 11 successes have been over hurdles and fences. Won on latest Flat run but handicap mark a career high and unlikely winner.
14 | Gunnery |
Fifth in the Listed Queen’s Vase at Royal Ascot in 2016 but didn’t run between July that year and this month, when runner-up in maiden hurdle. Has ability but would be a tremendous training performance if he won.
15 | Yabass |
A long time since the four-year-old wasn’t well beaten. Looks unfavourably handicapped, has to prove he stays and no obvious reason for optimism.
16 | Mancini |
Won at Goodwood over 3200m last year and encouraging recent run when 2nd to Carnwennan over 3251m. Is 7lb better off with that winner which puts him right in the picture.
17 | Batts Rock |
Stablemate of Mengli Khan. Undistinguished over hurdles, possibly better on Flat but would be a surprise winner.
18 | Buildmeupbuttercup |
Trainer Willie Mullins, Ireland’s leading jumps trainer, has won this race three of the last four years. He was automatically respected but an act of faith rather than form – unplaced in three Flat runs and only respectable hurdles form since.
19 | Fun Mac |
Stout stayer, 2nd in this race in 2015 and fair runs in Queen Alexandra Stakes over 4300m last two years. Decent return from break in Chester Cup last month but eight years old and probably on decline.
20 | The Cashel Man |
Moved to top jumps trainer Nicky Henderson this year and finished runner-up in three hurdle races before reverting to Flat. Well behind Coeur Blimey at Newbury and Carnwennan at York and turnaround in weights unlikely to be enough to reverse the form.
