1200m – Turf

1 Bacchus A good sprint handicapper who has a good record at Ascot and acts on soft going but not seen since outclassed and last there in G1 British Champions Sprint last October.
2 Vanbrugh Moved from Andre Fabre to Charles Hills this year, the four-year-old won well over 1400m at Thirsk before fair run at Haydock. 1200m and fast ground would suit.
3 Cape Byron First run over as short a trip and not bred for sprinting but goes well at Ascot, acts on soft going and, on sole run this year, won competitive 26 runner handicap over 1400m. A good chance.
4 Gifted Master Prolific winner at distances from 1000m to 1600m. Has won G3s at 1200m and 1600m and won prestigious Stewards’ Cup Handicap at Goodwood last year. Well beaten most recent run and best on fast ground.
5 Hey Jonesy Only won one of 13 races – two years ago – but has run some fine races, including when 5th in last year’s G1 Commonwealth Cup at Royal Ascot. Two more good runs this year, latterly when 5th to Invincible Army in G2 at York over 1200m. Acts on soft going.
6 Baron Bolt In good form last year, finishing by winning valuable Ayr Gold Cup over 1200m on heavy going. Struggling to find form this year, last of six in good Listed race at Windsor latest and not well handicapped.
7 Spring Loaded Decent sprint handicapper won valuable 20 runner race at Ascot last year. Well beaten on sole run this season in Listed event at Windsor. 8 of 11 wins on all-weather tracks and best on fast ground.
8 Southern Horse Moved to Jim Bolger in Ireland after racing in Argentina where ran well in G1 events over 1000m, including on heavy going on turf. Intriguing but difficult to assess.
9 Marnie James Ran well when 3rd at York over 1000m last month but then disappointed over same course and distance. Most form is over 1000m, best on fast ground and handicapped to the hilt.
10 Lake Volta A solid performer, ran 16 times last year when won Listed race at Epsom over 1400m on soft going. Won 1200m handicap at Goodwood over 1200m in May and runner-up off 103 at Epsom this month.
11 Gunmetal Improved last year when won three sprint handicaps. Run sound races on two outings in May but has to defy rising handicap mark.
12 Straight Right Bought for 450,000 pounds as 3YO but only won two of 11 subsequent races. Good level of ability but not well handicapped. Raced mainly over further and well beaten on latest run at Ascot in May.
13 Intisaab Prolific winning sprinter who is generally consistent but now an 8YO. A difficult task.
14 Merhoob Six of 8 career wins on all-weather, latest success when sprang shock at Chester in May before almost last at Newmarket two weeks ago. Not well handicapped and best on fast ground.
15 Stone Of Destiny Both wins on all-weather and never raced on softer than good. Disappointed on latest two runs. An unlikely victor.
16 Danzeno Fascinating contender. Has fine record at Ascot including 3rd in G1 British Champions Sprint in 2015 and 5th in Wokingham in 2017. Now an 8YO and appeared to be in decline until romping home on reappearance over 1007m at Nottingham this month. Acts on soft going and a good chance.
17 Tis Marvellous Good record at Ascot. 4th in this race last year and won handicap at track last August. In fair form this year and on decent handicap mark. Soft going may be a problem. A live outsider.
18 Perfection Won Listed race over 1200m at Newmarket last year and good 2nd in G3 on soft ground at Lingfield in May. Disappointed in Listed race at Haydock since but has a realistic chance.
19 Foxtrot Lady Not a prolific winner. Making first appearance at Ascot and seems to be best on fast ground but good 4th in well contested Listed race at Windsor last month.
20 Corinthia Knight All nine wins been on all-weather tracks. Only once run on softer than good when ran well to be 4th of 23 in Super Sprint at Newbury in 2017. Won at Wolverhampton latest outing in April. A difficult task.
21 Soldier’s Minute Surprise winner of competitive 21 runner handicap over 1200m at York last month. Won easily and probably cope with an 8lb higher handicap rating but prefers faster ground.
22 Cenotaph Trainer Jeremy Noseda’s final runner before retiring. All four wins on all-weather tracks. Well beaten on latest run at Newmarket and not well handicapped.
23 Summerghand In good form this year, runner-up in two decent handicaps. Acts on soft going and a live outsider.
24 Raucous Decent handicapper over 1200m and 1400m but infrequent winner, not well handicapped and soft going would be against him.
25 Alba Power Up and down form in France but capable of good performances especially on soft ground. Won conditions race at Chantilly over 1200m last month. Doesn’t look generously handicapped.
26 Watchable Stalwart 9YO won 7 of 60 races. 5th in this race in 2015 and currently running to his best, beating Lake Volta over 1203m at Epsom this month. Not well handicapped and best on fast ground.
27 Fighting Irish Ran well in G1 Commonwealth Cup last year but not won since 2017 and well beaten both runs this year. Hard to make a case for.
28 Recon Mission String of solid runs in sprint handicaps in Ireland and England leading to deserved success in valuable handicap over 1200m at York a week ago. Up another 7lb but in fine form and acts on soft ground.
Reserves
29 Sir Maximilian This 10YO once won a G3 but in decline, despite first win since 2016 when 33-1 winner of 1202m handicap at Doncaster last month. An unlikely winner.
30 Gossamer Wings Second in G2 Queen Mary Stakes last year and creditable 5th in G1 Cheveley Park Stakes at Newmarket. Less good so far this year and soft ground would be against her.
31 Gulliver Consistent but not won since 2017 and form has flattened out. Hard to see him winning.
