G2 – 2800m – Turf
| Doublemint | Justin Snaith-trained stayer who is undoubtedly one of the best in the country. Ran on well to win the Grade 3 Chairman’s Cup over 2500m three weeks back where he beat a number of these runners. Definitely the horse to beat. |
| Atyaab | Mike de Kock’s charge finished a 2.7-length third behind Doublemint in the Chairman’s Cup. Will have blinkers this time and the 2018 Cape Derby winner should get a lot closer. |
| Kampala Campari | Did well in his first attempt at 2400m last time when a 0.95-length third behind Strathdon. Will meet his conqueror on 6lb better terms this time and should turn the tables. With Aldo Domeyer up Andre Nel’s charge could be a factor. |
| Tap O’Noth | Came from a long way back to finish just 3.75 lengths behind Doublemint last time and this former Grade 1 Cape Guineas winner could be capable of an upset if he sees out the distance. |
| Strathdon | Another who ran on well behind Doublemint last time but this Justin Snaith-trained runner could battle to finish in front of Atyaab this time. |
| Gimme One Night | Decent stayer but he will struggle to beat all of Doublemint, Kampala Kampari, Strathdon and Atyaab at the weights. Capable of running into a place, though. |
| Crome Yellow | Ran well when a 0.2-length second to Doublemint last time but now 11 lb worse off, looks unlikely to reverse the form. Has a lot to do at the weights and should be well held. |
| Dharma | Won the Grade 2 Winter Derby in what was a major upset last season and then did the same when winning the Grade 3 Cape Summer Stayers at long odds. Clearly talented on his day but is outclassed in this company. |
| Swift Surprise | This is the third runner from the Justin Snaith yard and is another well outgunned by Doublemint. Little to enthuse over at the weights. |
| Dynasty’s Blossom | This is definite upset material if well. She beat better than this to win the Grade 3 Gold Cup over 3200m at Greyville in July. Has changed stables and has had two warm-up runs over 1800m. She is one runner who holds Doublemint on their Gold Cup form and trainer Brett Crawford has engaged Ryan Moore for the ride. Include in all bets. |
| Snapscan | Glen Kotzen’s charge is the best handicapped runner but there is a question as to whether she will see out 2800m. If she does, she must have a chance of some sort. |
| Princess Irene | Looks well held by Snapscan on their run in the Oaks at Scottsville and looks to have little chance in this field. |
| Coral Bay | Another filly from the Glen Kotzen yard but she is not well handicapped and does not have the form to be competitive in this line-up. |
