G1 – 1600m – Turf

Celtic Sea A top-class filly from the Sean Tarry yard who has performed exceptionally over the last year, winning two G1 races over 1200m and 1600m. Is currently in top form and will come as a surprise if she is not in the places.
Clouds Unfold Winner of this race last year, Candice Bass-Robinson’s charge went wrong during the winter and missed her trip to Durban. She has taken a while to come right but the word from the stable is that she will be back to her best for this race.
Front And Centre Was all the rage to win the G1 Paddock Stakes over 1800m but failed to match Queen Supreme and could only finish 5th. She is better than that and there is no doubt her best form is over 1600m. Anton Marcus rides.
Santa Clara Has not been at her best since winning the G2 KZN Fillies Guineas at Greyville last year, beating Front And Centre. On recent form she is held by a number of these fillies and would do well to run a place. Also has to deal with a wide draw.
Silvano’s Pride One of three runners from the Justin Snaith yard who has been running consistently well of late. Won the G1 Woolavington over 2000m at Greyville in June but will battle to turn the tables on Queen Supreme on her 2.6L 3rd to that filly in the Paddock Stakes.
Miyabi Gold Another Justin Snaith runner who is a consistent place getter. However, she is better over further and is unlikely to turn around a 2.7L deficit on Queen Supreme over 200m less.
Temple Grafin Highly rated by the Glen Kotzen yard early in her career but her form does not match those expectations. This will be her third run after a lengthy layoff but she does look outclassed in this strong field.
Helen’s Ideal A decent filly for whom 1600m is her ideal distance. Sadly, she does look a notch below the best in the country. Trainer Paul Reeves has taken the blinkers off for this race and it will be interesting to see if that move helps. She does have a good draw.
Star Fighter Another runner from the Candice Bass-Robinson yard who is consistent in handicap company against her own sex, looks well held by Front And Centre and Silvano’s Pride.
Stelvio This five-year-old mare looks to be an optimistic entry. Her best form is on the Polytrack in Durban and her last two runs have been very poor.
Queen Supreme A winner of five of her seven starts, this Mike de Kock-trained Irish-bred filly could not have been more impressive when winning the G1 Paddock Stakes (1800m) last time. She is even better over 1600m and will be very hard to beat. Looks the stand-out bet on the card.
Sleeping Single Has three wins and three seconds in her last six starts but takes a massive jump in class and does not look good enough to compete against these runners, even with maestro Piere Strydom in the irons.
Kelpie One of two three-year-olds in the field, this daughter of Dynasty is highly regarded by her stable. She failed to overcome a wide draw in the G1 Cape Fillies Guineas but this time she jumps from No 1 draw and could run into the places.
Third Runway The second three-year-old who looks to have some ability. She has run six times for three wins and a 3rd in the G1 Cape Fillies Guineas. Had a decent warm-up run when a 5.9L 4th behind Celtic Sea in the Sceptre Stakes over 1200m. Jumps from No 12 draw but could place.
