G1 – 1000m – Turf
Battaash |
Europe’s outstanding sprinter who thrashed his rivals in this speed battle two years ago (at Chantilly) but was a slightly disappointing, though a close fourth last year. In great form this season, and showed blistering speed to win a G1 at York last time. Will be hard to beat. |
Mabs Cross |
One of the top sprinters and produced an electric performance from an unfavourably wide gate when winning this last year. Behind Battaash on several occasions this season and will need to return to her brilliant best to win this again. Doesn’t want very soft ground. |
Fairyland |
Was a G1 winner as a two-year-old about a year ago. That was over 1200m but she has the pace to win over this trip at the top level as she showed when landing a G1 at The Curragh last month. Chances on that evidence but doesn’t always follow one good run with another one. |
Soldier’s Call |
A rare two-year-old contender in this great sprint last year, and showed customary early speed to run an excellent third and ahead of Battaash. He hasn’t managed to win since then and has been a beaten favourite on several occasions but he hasn’t been beaten far on any of his 2019 starts. |
Glass Slippers |
UK trained but her two best performances have come in France on her last two starts, gaining narrow wins at Deauville and in a G3 over this course and distance – unexpected in the betting each time. Latterly she came from off the pace to get the money in the last few strides. This famous sprint then became the obvious target. |
Invincible Army |
Sometimes disappoints but very fast on his day as he showed when coming with a powerful surge from off the speed to win a fast ground G2 over 1200m at York in May. He mostly competes over 1200m but was a close third in a G1 over this distance at The Curragh last month. |
So Perfect |
This powerful filly usually races over further than this and she won a 1200m G3 sprint on fast ground at Naas back in May. But she ran really well over this trip when prominent from the gates and still strong at the finish when only beaten a short-head behind race opponent Fairyland in a G1 on good ground at The Curragh last month. |
Shades Of Blue |
A very speedy filly who has been involved in close finishes in nearly all her starts this year. That includes her career best performance last time when she looked like winning a G3 sprint here in September only to be nailed close home. She has been kept away from soft ground, so a good surface is probably best for her. |
Sestilio Jet |
French-trained sprinters rarely win this, their premier sprint. However at least he has winning form over this course and distance with Frankie Dettori guiding him to a G3 defeat of eight rivals here in May. The ground was heavy that day but he seems flexible regarding ground conditions. |
Gold Vibe |
A generally consistent French-trained sprinter though more often second than he wins. He ran a cracking race in this last year, almost providing the French with a rare winner in their leading sprint. Seems as good as ever judging by his fast-finishing third in a G3 over this course and distance last month. |
El Astronaute |
A popular 12-times winning sprinter who invariably uses his exceptional gate speed to lead. That early pace saw him win a Listed race and a handicap at Cork and The Curragh earlier this season. Slow ground would be fine for him. |
Ken Colt |
Quite a lightly-raced French-trained sprinter who has had a 71-day break since winning a Listed race over this distance on very soft ground at Deauville. His best performances have come on that type of surface. |
Finsbury Square |
A close fourth in this G1 in 2016, seventh in 2017 (both those races at Chantilly) and beaten 3 3/4L ninth of 16 here last year. Has only competed once since when third in a minor event last week which have sharpened him up for another crack at this big prize. |
Jolie |
A rare two-year-old contender for this. She has had a busy first season, winning twice and has been placed at up to G2 level. Despite the weight advantage she gets, she will probably struggle at this level. |
Recon Mission |
His three wins have come in maiden or handicap company and he was soundly beaten on his only venture into a Group race. Best on slow ground, he likes to lead but whether he will have enough pace to do that here seems doubtful. |
Spinning Memories |
Despite having an entry in the 1400m Prix de la Foret and never having competed over 1000m she has been supplemented for this dash. She was very stylish and looked very fast when surging clear in a 1200m G3 event at Deauville in August. |
