G3 – 1000m – Turf

Mabs Cross Very popular UK sprinter who never seems to run a bad race. That includes this race last year when she surged from the back to lead close home. Concluded last season with another terrific late charge to win the Prix de L’Abbaye at Longchamp, her first G1 triumph. Though a G1 penalty will make life tougher.
El Astronaute Has an excellent record and is a ten times winner, mostly in handicaps over 1000m. However he led from gate to wire to land an 1100m Listed contest at Maisons-Laffitte last October. That was on soft ground, but he made a fine start to 2019 when a narrow second on fast ground last month.
Encore d’Or His last four starts have been on an all-weather surface, but he is effective on grass with a 3-23 success rate on turf.  Beaten 2L in sixth in this event last year and it is hard to see him winning it this time especially as Newmarket’s undulations don’t look ideal.
Equilateral Has won three of his ten starts. Raced a bit too freely when fourth in a 1200m G3 here last month, getting to the front but just running out of gas in the closing stages.
Judicial Has won 11 of his 28 starts, and came close to winning this last year – just nailed by Mabs Cross close home. He won twice subsequently last season including with a probable career best in a G3 at Sandown on fast ground. Best when challenging off a fast gallop.
Major Jumbo Led from the start when winning over this course and distance in April 2018, his only previous visit to Newmarket. Only one poor show in nine starts since and he likes to get into a fight. May just prefer a slow surface, but he’s adaptable. Stable having a good spell.
Ornate A tough sprinter who proved his well-being when scoring under an aggressive ride in a handicap over this course and distance last month. However he is 0-14 in stakes company and was eighth of nine in this race last year. Fast, but probably not quite good enough.
Sir Thomas Gresham On his second career run he survived a slow start to quickly lead and fend off three rivals over 1200m here last November. Ran another good race here – also over 1200m – when showing plenty of speed before fading in a G3 last month. May struggle down at this distance in hot company.
Tarboosh Some of his nine wins have come on fast ground but ideally it would be on the slow side, and he posted a career best in those conditions when outspeeding 21 rivals under top weight in a sprint handicap at Doncaster last October. Made an encouraging start to 2019 when third last month.
Queen Of Desire Lightly raced but she has now won four of her last five starts, all over this distance and looking best on a fast surface. She had to show commitment to squeeze through a gap to win at Bath on her 2019 return last month. However this looks a much stronger affair.
Sergei Prokofiev A real speed machine who put up maybe a career best when winning a fast-ground G3 over this course and distance last October, confidently ridden from off the pace. Looked as good as ever on his 2019 return, again delivered late to win cosily at Navan. Good chance.
