G1 – 1800m – Turf

Promising Run This very high class mare has not let her supporters down in either start at Meydan this year winning a G2 in January and another one – over this distance last month. She did have to work hard last time, having raced too keenly for some of that race. Has a good gate for a mare who likes to race prominently.
Folkswood Led and was only grabbed late on when runner-up in this race last year. Yet another excellent Meydan performance when winning a 2000m G3 on his return here last month. Off a slow pace he had to sit and wait to find a gap but – showing a lot of speed – he nailed today’s rival Leshlaa right on the wire.
Blair House A lightly-raced five-year-old but he looks increasingly potent, especially here at Meydan. Runner-up on his first two starts here this year, he then was relaxed at the back before delivering a powerful surge to mow down his rivals in a decent handicap over this distance last month. He deserves a crack at this G1 prize.
Rodaini Quite useful in the UK, but he hasn’t really thrived in three attempts on dirt at Meydan this year. The switch back to turf may well be helpful but his overall profile does not suggest a win here.
GM Hopkins Formerly trained by UK ace John Gosden who generally kept him to handicaps where he had a particularly good record over the straight 1600m at Ascot. He could never reach a challenging position on his Meydan debut, finishing 4 ½ lengths seventh to today’s rival Janoobi in a G2 last month.
Eqtiraan Ran his best race for some time after finishing strongly after a slow start when second in a local listed race over 1400m at Abu Dhabi earlier this month. He steps up in distance here but it would be a huge shock if he won.
Leshlaa Looks to have improved since arriving at Meydan. He was a bit too keen on his first start here but settled nicely before coming with a strong surge to easily beat today’s rival Blair House in a turf handicap here in February. Then only just caught by today’s rival Folkswood in a G3, though the winner had a worse trip there.
Janoobi Ran a dismal first race of 2018 at Meydan but much better in two starts subsequently. Latterly he grabbed a prominent early position – ideal tactics for him – and was in command of that 1600m G2 in the closing stages. Chances here though up in distance and not with an ideal gate.
Whisky Baron Ran up a winning sequence in South Africa including a G1 at Kenilworth early last year. However a trip to the UK didn’t work out and he was beset by various training setbacks. Nonetheless he indicated that he may be returning to his best after a solid run, just 3 lengths behind Janoobi in a G2 here last month.
Benbatl He won a G3 here in January and a G2 in February – both over this distance – and very impressively did he deal with his opposition each time. His gate is tricky here but he doesn’t need to be right up with pace, and it will come as no surprise if he proves formidable in the closing stages.
Above N Beyond Returning from a long break when he arrived in Dubai, doing better on his first start here when leading for most of the way in a 1400m handicap. Facts and figures suggest that Gerald Mosse’s mount has a lot on his plate this time.
