In response to COVID-19, the Hong Kong Jockey Club (the Club) has been implementing measures to control attendance at race meetings since February. As a result, attendance has been significantly reduced, from an average of 22,000 to not more than 500. Currently only owners with starters are admitted to racecourses on race days.
In addition, the Club has implemented a range of precautionary measures at racecourses during race meetings, including temperature screening of all customers and staff, mandatory wearing of face masks by all staff, and regular and deep cleaning of facilities. As a result, there has been no public health incident at race meetings.
Following the Government’s announcement that it would gradually but steadily resume public services from 2 March, the Club has initiated a review of precautionary measures implemented at racecourses. It has also reviewed feedback from horse owners and members. Taking these findings into consideration, the Club has decided that, in addition to owners with starters, Voting Members with seasonal tables will be admitted to race meetings at the Happy Valley meeting on 11 March. However, racecourse cross betting will remains unavailable and all betting facilities at Sha Tin Clubhouse will be closed.
Venues that will be open on March 11 are Owners Box 2/F, Owners Box 3/F and Voting Members Box on 5/F. The Club will continue to ensure social distancing at all racecourse venues open during race meetings. It will also continue to implement all other precautionary measures for the protection of customers and staff.
