The Hong Kong Jockey Club has appointed Michael Kinane and Crispin de Moubray to lead its purchases of young stock from the industry’s top Northern Hemisphere auctions.

The pair represented the Hong Kong Jockey Club at the recent Arqana August Yearling Sale at Deauville, France, where they bought four colts. Each year, the Hong Kong Jockey Club purchases at auction unraced youngsters to be offered at its exclusive Hong Kong International Sale.

Kinane retired from the saddle in 2009 as a world-renowned big-race jockey and 13-time Irish champion, with victories in the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe, Melbourne Cup, Japan Cup, Belmont Stakes and Derby on his illustrious race-riding record. He enjoyed major successes as a rider in Hong Kong, too, notably four wins at the Hong Kong International Races and Viva Pataca’s 2007 QEII Cup victory.

De Moubray, a bloodstock agent for almost 30 years, has been part of the Club’s purchasing team for several years.

The pair’s combined wealth of experience in the industry will ensure that the Club continues to source high quality young stock for its members.

Michael Kinane

Michael Kinane was Ireland’s Champion Jockey 13 times across 34 decorated years in the saddle. He rose to prominence as stable jockey for Dermot Weld and in 1990 he rode Go And Go to victory in the third and final leg of the American Triple Crown, the Belmont Stakes. In 1993 he struck again on the international stage for Weld, this time securing the Melbourne Cup aboard Vintage Crop. A number of years followed and as retained rider for Coolmore, he registered an astonishing 58 Group 1 wins across a five-year period that began in 1998, just one year after his Japan Cup triumph aboard Pilsudski. Throughout his career, Kinane tallied 10 English classic race wins: Derby (1993, 2001 & 2009), Oaks (1998 & 2001), 2,000 Guineas (1990, 1997, 1998, 2009) and St. Leger (2001) as well as a record-setting seven Irish Champion Stakes wins (1989, 1994, 1997 2000, 2003, 2004 & 2009). The globetrotting Kinane also tallied 170 wins in Hong Kong, with 13 of those at the top level, most notably four Hong Kong International Race wins and a partnership with Viva Pataca that netted back-to-back Champions & Chater Cup (2006 & 2007) successes and the 2007 QEII Cup. Kinane retired at the end of the 2009 racing season in Great Britain and he capped off his final year in the saddle with six Group 1 wins aboard the world’s highest rated horse at the time, Sea The Stars, who gave him his third Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe victory.

Crispin de Moubray is a Paris-based Bloodstock agent with almost 30 years of experience specialising in Bloodstock Portfolio management, in which capacity he has been associated with many champions, Classic winners and leading sires. He started out in racing as a journalist, handicapper and gallops correspondent and also spent two years with Newmarket trainer Robert Williams.
