1575m – Turf

1 Maydanny Earnt a 6lb penalty for his victory over 17 rivals in a red-hot Goodwood handicap. Looks better than ever but did disappoint on his only previous York run.
2 Magical Morning Well fancied for a classy Goodwood handicap and travelled smoothly into contention before fading, having previously beaten the horse that won that race, at Sandown.
3 Escobar Has been beaten on his 19 last starts – his last win coming over this distance. Two strong efforts at Goodwood last month suggest he is in good shape.
4 Indeed Having his first start for a stable currently struggling for winners. His first start also for 428 days but more hopefully he has won off an absence before. Slow ground is ideal.
5 Astro King His second of 30 in a Royal Ascot handicap over a straight 1600m in June was a career best effort. Probable excuses for a less good effort up in distance at this track last time.
6 Orbaan Seventh in this race last year off a 4lb higher handicap mark. His last career win came over this course and distance, but he will need to improve on recent efforts.
7 Young Fire Surged from the back to win a soft-ground Haydock handicap last month under top weight. Another good effort under ideal slow ground conditions at Ascot this month.
8 Fame And Acclaim A big horse – formerly Irish-trained – has run well on his last two starts including when third in a strong handicap over this course and distance. Likes good or slower ground.
9 Ascension Tried over further than this here last time but, after appearing to travel well, he faded out. Looked suited to 1600m and slowish ground when scoring at Newbury in May.
10 Tammani The stable have a good record in this and he is having his first start for them after a spell in France. In 2019 he had led from the gate to win a 1600m Deauville Listed race.
11 Baashir Probably needs to be held up as he looks lazy when leading, but he is on the upgrade having won two of his last three races including over 1400m here. Best on quick ground.
12 Trais Fluors Fast ground seems the key to his chance, surging late to win a Sandown handicap on those conditions earlier in the season. Not obviously well handicapped, though.
13 Cliffs Of Capri Having his York debut, his last win coming with a surprise victory at Meydan early last year. He has run plenty of good races in defeat since including at Ascot last time.
14 La Trinidad Plenty of York experience and his last two runs have resulted in wins here. Last time he squeezed through a gap to win a handicap over this trip, probably his best ever effort.
15 Cruyff Turn Led from gate to wire to win two 1400m handicaps at Leicester and Redcar in June. However there will be lots of competition for the lead in this much tougher handicap.
16 Fox Champion A G2 winner over this trip in Cologne much earlier in his career but 15 defeats since including quite a few disappointing efforts. Not beaten far on his last two starts.
17 Irish Admiral Stable in great form but he is yet to win in five starts on a turf surface. However he did run a good third on his only York run – over further than this.
18 Ametist A big horse who should be suited to this galloping track. Outpaced when favourite last time having won his four previous races, and this step up to 1600m looks a plus.
19 Pythagoras Hasn’t looked like winning any of his four starts this season – and a beaten favourite last time – with his handicap mark remaining stubbornly high.
20 Gifted Ruler Only having his ninth career start. Didn’t perform well here in June but has shown much more spark when runner-up in two handicaps since.
