Caspar Fownes will send Southern Legend on a giant-slaying mission against Exultant in Sunday’s (3 November) G3 Sa Sa Ladies’ Purse Handicap (1800m).
Nine days ago a Fownes runner downed Hong Kong’s ‘Goliath’ Beauty Generation when Rise High halted the seemingly invincible mile champion’s 18-month winning streak. Now the handler is setting Southern Legend at the titan of Hong Kong’s staying division.
“Southern Legend could be dangerous getting six pounds off the champ,” Fownes said at Sha Tin this morning, Tuesday, 29 October.
“The 1800 metres is not a problem: as he’s got older, a mile or 2000 metres, we’ve seen him put in big runs at both distances.”
When stablemate Rise High rattled wide and fast to win the G2 Oriental Watch Sha Tin Trophy Handicap (1600m) – exposing in Beauty Generation a chink of vulnerability – Southern Legend closed to a promising fifth. Fownes expects a bold show this weekend against Exultant, the circuit’s outstanding Champion Stayer and last year’s G1 LONGINES Hong Kong Vase (2400m) hero.
“Southern Legend is in good form going into this race. I think he’s there the next few runs to pick up some stake money,” the trainer said.
