1600m – Turf
1 | Magnetic Charm | Kicked off 2019 with a good win in a York Listed race over this trip. Clearly an improved filly but fast ground seems essential. |
2 | Coral Beach | Won a G3 on her 13th and final two-year-old start. Never looked like winning either of her two 2019 runs but they were G1 Classic races in France and Ireland. |
3 | Stay Classy | Had a rewarding two-year-old career and came close to winning a G3 in France on her final start. However, she was well beaten on her 2019 return. |
4 | Ice Gala | Made a winning seasonal and handicap debut, at Salisbury in April. She couldn’t build on that in a Musselburgh Listed event this month, but there may have been valid excuses. |
5 | Gypsy Spirit | A cheap purchase who is not very big and has won just one of her 12 starts. To her credit, she kept battling to the end when 3rd in a soft-ground Listed race at Chantilly last month. |
6 | Modern Millie | Has run respectably on all three 2019 starts including when 3rd here. Couldn’t accelerate in the closing stages over this trip at York last time. |
7 | Garrel Glen | A huge odds outsider for Newmarket’s 1000 Guineas on her 2019 debut, not disgraced though 10.5L behind the winner. Also ran okay at Goodwood last time. |
8 | Invitational | Surprised her trainer when winning at Kempton in January, following up in a hotter race at Wolverhampton, showing lots of speed from a tricky gate. |
9 | Nonchalance | Proven at this trip when easily winning on her penultimate start (form that worked out well) and then was a heavily backed winner at Newmarket. Those wins were on fast ground but she may be even better on good ground. |
10 | Model Guest | Without a win and her form does not look good enough for this. At least she did run quite well over this straight 1600m last time, prominent until fading late in that handicap. |
11 | Layaleena | Ran poorly over a longer trip than this on her 2019 return but it was a different story in a handicap at Nottingham last time when she led throughout and won easily. Fast ground suits. |
12 | El Gumryah | An outsider for her 2019 return over this trip at Kempton, but was fast from the gates and never got caught. Led briefly at York last time but ran out of gas. |
13 | Concello | Taken to Toulouse in France for a Listed race over this distance on her 2019 return being driven from the start but running on at the end. Led but faded in similar company at Musselburgh recently. |
14 | Lady Madison | Reappearing after a 214-day break in April, and she completely dominated that novices’ event over this distance in April. Her trainer immediately announced that this was her target. |
15 | Hotsy Totsy | Looks smart, having won her last two starts by 5L and 6L, leading throughout at Kempton last time. Fairly treated for this handicap debut and should stay 1600m. |
16 | Aim Power | Became disappointing last season and will also have to improve on her 2019 debut when 4th of six in a Nottingham handicap, racing too freely. At least her handicap mark is dropping. |
17 | Desirous | She made an excellent start to 2019 when winning a fillies’ handicap over this distance at Goodwood last month. That race has proved a good prep for this one in the past. |
18 | Maamora | Second on her first three starts this season, facing some decent rivals each time. Against lesser rivals over this distance at Ripon this month she led throughout and won by 6L. First handicap now. |
19 | No Way Jose | Up to this distance for the first time. She improved last time to run 2nd over 1400m at Leicester, only beaten by a well-handicapped rival. |
20 | I’m Available | A Nottingham handicap winner in April, she then looked the likely winner over this straight 1600m only to be caught near the end. Her new handicap mark makes this look difficult. |
21 | California Love | Against race-hardened rivals on this first start for 218 days. Won twice last season, giving the impression that the rise to 1600m would suit when winning at Chelmsford. |
22 | Flighty Almighty | Wore down the favourite to win nicely at Wolverhampton in April. However back on turf, she couldn’t handle Listed company at York – coming under strong pressure 600m out and fading. |
23 | Gallic | Bred to stay well and was keeping in nicely when 3rd over this distance at Newmarket in April. Didn’t respond quite as well in the closing stages last time. |
24 | Kimblewick | Both runs this season have been over 2000m, running encouragingly at Chelmsford but didn’t show much zip when last of eight in Listed company subsequently. |
25 | Spanish Aria | Closed down last season with a win at Chelmsford and was favourite for her return at Kempton this month. Nothing went right for her there, and she can do better. |
26 | Star Of War | Defeated weak opposition on her 2019 return at Kempton. Has run quite well twice since and stays this distance, but doesn’t look particularly well handicapped. |
27 | Whimbrel | Got off the mark on her latest start when showing early speed from a wide draw, then simply outclassing her rivals on that all-weather surface. Down in trip from that 2000m for this handicap debut. |
28 | Thanks Be | Has stamina for this trip and also appears to handle fast and slow ground. Two narrow defeats this season give some encouragement that she will perform well here. |
