1203m – Turf

1 Lake Volta Looks versatile trip wise, dropping down to this distance and probably posting a career best effort when leading from gate to wire at Goodwood in May. Fast conditions suit and a rising handicap rating does not rule out another big run in his current mood.
2 Stone Of Destiny Not seen since fading out in a valuable all-weather event at Lingfield. Earlier in the year a slow start but a fast finish had seen him go close to winning a big prize over this trip at Doha, Qatar. Clearly has plenty of ability but yet to win on a turf surface.
3 Reputation Moving to a new stable before the start of the season, his trainer decide to take off his visor, and that headgear change may have helped as he survived a slow start to win that 1200m sprint at Ripon in April in good style. Not as sharp at York subsequently.
4 Spanish City Has won over this trip earlier in his career but his last nine starts have been at around 1400m. He returned from a 230-day break posting a big effort at Newmarket in May, only run out of the winner’s money close home. Has chances here on that evidence.
5 Watchable Much more consistent now than he was and back in the winners’ enclosure at Doncaster last time, leading throughout in a handicap over this distance. Still feasibly handicapped, and he ran a good fourth off a 2lb higher handicap mark in this in 2017.
6 Areen Heart A frustrating horse as he has only won three times but has been second or third 19 times. At Goodwood on his latest start, he was held up off the pace but could make no impression under strong pressure late on. He handles fast ground.
7 Squats A highly unpredictable horse according to his trainer and that is borne out by the fact that he often shows nothing before bouncing back with a winning performance as he did when scoring over 1400m at Newbury last August. More disappointments since.
8 Mountain Peak Effective from 1000m to 1400m, he won three handicaps last season, latterly when a strong challenge from midfield got him the money in a 1000m Ascot sprint in September. Facing a tougher handicap mark now but should be sharper for his 2019 debut in May.
9 Beyond Equal Had a very good spell last season, winning four handicaps over this trip including on a fast surface. The consequent rising handicap mark has made things a bit more difficult but his recent fourth at Doncaster -despite racing too keenly – was another good show.
10 Helvetian Had a busy 2018, racing 17 times though winning just twice, latterly over this trip on good ground at Salisbury. He races off a 2lb easier handicap mark here so technically he has a chance but he will still need to upgrade from recent performances.
11 Gabrial The Devil From a stable that have successfully targeted this race before. Has only won two of his 20 career starts but they did at least come over this distance. Hasn’t been beaten far in either start this season but still some improvement is required.
12 Ashpan Sam Won this race in 2014 and 2015 so must be respected especially as he races off an easier handicap mark these days. This veteran hasn’t raced for 261 days and he’ll need to be fighting fit to have another winning chance here.
13 Tawny Port Has won five of his 17 starts on a grass surface but visiting Epsom for the first time today. Has done well to recover from some serious injury problems but he didn’t show much on his 2019 reappearance and first start for this stable, in May.
14 Paddy Power Withdrawn
15 Manshood His three turf victories have all come on a slow surface, and that must be a worry with fast conditions expected to prevail. At least he arrives here in decent form, leading about 200m out to win a 1100m handicap at Wetherby in May but his new handicap mark may make things tricky.
16 Harrogate Now trained here in Epsom and he gained his second career victory on his latest start when he flew out of the gate to grab the stands’ rail at Lingfield and was never headed. Moves back up to 1200m but could still be nicely handicapped if in the same form here.
17 Blaine An interesting horse having had lots of absences but a G2 winner way back in 2012 and he landed a bit of a gamble when winning this race in 2016. Not disgraced on his return at Ascot in May and being given a bit of a chance by the handicapper.
