1600m – Turf

1 Cot Campbell Highly regarded colt by his connections, but has yet to perform to those expectations. His best effort came in the G1 Cape Guineas over this course and distance last time when he ran on strongly to finish a 1.85-length 4th behind Tap O’Noth. Has a decent draw in six.
2 Captain And Master He was a top juvenile and placed third in the G2 Golden Horseshoe (1400m) in Durban. After a good comeback win over 1400m he proved slightly disappointing in both the G2 Selangor Cup and G1 Cape Guineas. Finished behind Cot Campbell in the Guineas. Has a wide draw.
3 Flying Free Has placed in some feature races but has managed only once to get his nose down on the line. Did run a great race in the G2 Dingaans (1600m) at Turffontein off a wide draw two back.
4 Rocket Countdown Won the G2 Selangor Cup over this distance in his second run after being gelded and was touted in some corners as a G1 Cape Guineas winner. He never got into the race and finished unplaced and is another who has a wide draw to overcome this time.
5 Talk Of The Town Comes into this race having won his last three, and while he meets stronger opposition he did beat older horses well last time in his first attempt at 1600m. Has a top jockey aboard in Anton Marcus but is drawn wide in 12.
6 Ancestry One of the best juveniles in the country last season but has not shown much since turning three. Finished 5L behind Rocket Countdown in the G2 Selangor Cup two back. He is another with a wide draw. Trainer Joey Ramsden is reapplying the blinkers and that could help.
7 Vacquero Good effort for 1.25L third behind Monks Hood in the G2 Dingaans at Turffontein in November. He suffered interference at a vital stage of that race and some, including his jockey and trainer, considered him an unlucky loser. Unraced since.
8 Undercover Agent The 1600m looks a query on his unplaced efforts in the G2 Selangor Cup and G1 Cape Guineas. He tends to perform best when able to set the pace and, as he does jump from the inside draw, he might be able to do that here.
9 Big Pleasure He is a consistent place getter but has raced against weaker. Experiment to run him in blinkers last time when unplaced clearly went awry and they have been removed. Well drawn.
10 Aurelia Cotta Highly-rated filly with some good form. She produced a nice effort when 4th in the Listed Sea Cottage Stakes last time out up to 1800m against some good colts. Has to contend with a wide gate.
11 Midnight Moonlight Lightly-raced filly who failed in the G1 Fillies Guineas but ran superbly to run a 0.8L fourth to Leaves Of Grass in the Listed Jamaica Handicap over 2000m. Well drawn, but drops back to a mile.
12 Too Phat To Fly Consistent sort who looks a touch below Classic material, as shown when unplaced in the G2 Fillies Championship (1400m) and the G1 Fillies Guineas (1600m).
13 Awesomeness Has produced some of her best runs on the Polytrack in Durban although she does boast a win over 1000m on turf. Coming out of weaker contests. Has a wide draw.
14 Raya Baya Has consistent form in fillies’ company. Ran well when beaten just a head in the Listed Jamaica Handicap over 2000m and suited over further than 1600m.
15 Rings And Things Consistent filly against her own sex. Well drawn. Found it too tough in the G1 Fillies Guineas behind Snowdance last time out.
16 Dynamic Diana Another who has only run against fillies but who remains lightly-raced. Has won two of her five starts, has an in-form jockey up in Grant Van Niekerk up and comes out of a top stable in Justin Snaith.
Reserves
17 Freedom Charter Drawn widest of all. Consistent against weaker company.
18 Apollo Star His run behind G1 Guineas runner-up White River back in October is notable. Drawn well.
19 Tsitsikamma Dance Has won two of his four starts. Looks above average.
