California Spangle and Romantic Warrior head an enthralling group of 14 selected runners for the HK$24 million BMW Hong Kong Derby (2000m) at Sha Tin on Sunday, 20 March.
Leading throughout to land the HK$12 million Hong Kong Classic Cup (1800m) last month, California Spangle shoots for his seventh victory in Hong Kong as he aims to join the cavalcade of equine stars to have claimed Hong Kong’s most sought-after prize this month.
Romantic Warrior joins him to share top billing – fresh following victory two starts ago in the HK$12 million Hong Kong Classic Mile (1600m), the 2021 Hong Kong International Sale graduate returns after his ground-covering effort last time out in the Hong Kong Classic Cup.
First contested in 1873, the BMW Hong Kong Derby is restricted to four-year-old runners over 2000 metres. Past winners of the coveted crown include global superstars River Verdon (1991), Oriental Express (1997), Vengeance Of Rain (2005), Viva Pataca (2006), Ambitious Dragon (2011), Designs On Rome (2014), Werther (2016), Rapper Dragon (2017) and Golden Sixty (2020), while last year’s edition was won by Sky Darci for Joao Moreira and Caspar Fownes.
Joining the winners of the first two legs of the HK$48 million Four-Year-Old Classic Series – Romantic Warrior and California Spangle – are 12 others, compiling form references from Australia, New Zealand, Great Britain and Ireland.
Mr Andrew Harding, The Hong Kong Jockey Club’s Executive Director of Racing, said: “The BMW Hong Kong Derby is one of the most important races on the calendar – a once-in-a-lifetime challenge that every owner aspires to have a runner in, or better yet, win.
