Club Jockey Grant van Niekerk

The Licensing Committee today withdrew the Club Jockey’s Licence previously issued to Grant van Niekerk with immediate effect.  This decision was as a result of a conduct-related matter which does not pertain to any race riding or other racing integrity-related matter.

As a result of the Licensing Committee’s decision, the Stewards have approved the following race riding substitutions for the Happy Valley racemeeting to be conducted on Wednesday, 8 April 2020:-

Race 1: V Borges on CENTENARY IBIS
Race 2: K C Leung on ELECTRIC LIGHTNING
Race 4: M F Poon on TRAVEL DATUK
Race 5: Z Purton on YOUNG LEGEND
Race 6: C Schofield on LARSON
Race 8: C Schofield on LOVING A BOOM

Apprentice Jockey Jerry Chau Chun Lok

The Licensing Committee also granted, subject to a satisfactory medical examination, a licence to ride in races to Apprentice Jockey Jerry Chau Chun Lok for the period commencing on a date to be fixed until the conclusion of the current 2019/2020 racing season inclusive, provided that Apprentice Chau is not permitted to race in any race at Happy Valley Racecourse until permission is granted from Management.  It is anticipated that Apprentice Chau will commence riding in races at the conclusion of a mandatory period of isolation upon his return to Hong Kong from Australia in the coming days.

Jerry Chau Chun Lok

After joining the Club’s Racing Trainee Program in September 2015, Jerry C L Chau (20 years old) commenced overseas training with Thoroughbred Racing SA in Adelaide, South Australia in January 2019.  Having being attached to the stable of leading Trainer Leon McDonald, he first rode in races on 20 March 2019.  Apprentice Chau has subsequently recorded 77 wins from 544 race rides at a winning strike rate of 14.2% and currently sits in 5th position on the South Australian Jockeys’ Championship.

Apprentice Chau has advised that his minimum riding weight is 110 lbs.
