1200m – Turf
1 | Cirillo | He is the best colt in the race and is undoubtedly the runner to beat. Sean Tarry’s charge has been performing in G1 company and looks a division better than his opposition. He has adapted very well to the conditions in the Cape. |
2 | Van Halen | He is something of an enigma as he can beat the best on this day and has even won a G1 race as a juvenile. Improved with blinkers last time and could be dangerous if he finds his best form. |
3 | Arabian Air | His last run can be ignored as he did not see out 1600m but he does have credentials over 1200m. However, at level weights looks outclassed by some of the other runners. |
4 | Sacred Arrow | Decent sort who is probably better over 1400m but is held by Cirillo on their run in the G1 Cape Guineas. Could run on into a place. |
5 | Palace Chapel | A very nice sort who makes his way from Johannesburg for this race but it will all depend on how he takes the 1500km journey by road. Very capable and distance suited, with a record of three wins and a close second in four starts. |
6 | Elusive Trader | Not a bad sort but does look held by Cirillo on previous performances. Has a good jockey in Bernard Fayd’Herbe and is another who could run into the places. |
7 | Seventh Sea | Was never seen when 16th of 16 runners behind Cirillo in his penultimate run but did put up a good performance last time when a 2.5-length third behind Pleasedtomeetyou. |
8 | Frank Lloyd Wright | An expensive purchase who has not yet lived up to his price tag. He is highly rated by his stable and ran in features while still a maiden and did not embarrass himself. Might not be up to the task just yet. |
9 | Mastagambit | Has only raced three times for a win and a second so there should be some improvement to come. Unlikely to win this race but could finish in the money. |
10 | Priceless Ruler | Won a good race over 1600m last time but is likely to find this distance a touch sharp. He did win his maiden over this distance but that was on the Polytrack in Durban. |
11 | Montego Bay | Has two wins and two places from eight starts but looks outclassed by some of the other runners and is unlikely to feature. |
12 | Captainofthesea | Ran third behind Cirillo two runs back but was beaten 4.25 lengths and at the same weight looks unlikely to trouble Tarry’s runner. |
13 | Clipper Captain | On current looks to have little chance of winning but trainer Justin Snaith will be running him in blinkers for the first time and he does have a good jockey in Greg Cheyne. Maybe the mystery package. |
14 | Temple Grafin | A very good filly who has raced against the best of her sex and age group. She has two wins and two seconds from six runs and her last start should be ignored as she probably found 1600m in the G1 Guineas too far. A big runner. |
15 | Shamrock Wind | Has some ability but looks outclassed against this level of opposition and would probably be looking for further. |
16 | Comaneci | Lightly raced filly with some decent form to her name but another who is making the long trek from Johannesburg. She is ideally distance suited. |
17 | Celestial Storm | Has two wins to her credit but does not have the form to trouble this field. |
18 | Dalai’s Promise | Has some ability but looks better over 1000m and could find herself outclassed. |
19 | Sugerpova | Has won twice over 1000m but seems unlikely to trouble this field. |
20 | Varsity Lover | She has won two of her four races but in the other two, which were features, she finished way down the field and does not look good enough to win this event. |
