| 1 | Fun Mac | Finished 4 3/4L fourth of six behind stablemate Nearly Caught in this race last year. Could never challenge late on over a more extreme distance than this at Royal Ascot last time, but he’d previously ran a good 2nd of 16 in a prestigious Chester handicap. |
| 2 | High Jinx | This veteran stayer has won two starts over hurdles lately. He has competed at the highest level on the Flat and in 2014 led for all the 4000m to win a G1 at Longchamp. The big issue is the ground as he has always been kept away from fast conditions. |
| 3 | Jukebox Jive | Accelerated to lead and then held on bravely to win a 2800m handicap here last year. He has also won over further than this so no stamina worries but he would prefer some easy ground – unlikely – and his rating also suggests this will be tricky. |
| 4 | Montaly | Usually held up for a late run as he was in this last year, only failing by 3/4L to catch Nearly Caught, similar tactics then seeing him winning a G2 at York. Not at his best in two starts this season but if he is firing today ratings give him a serious chance. |
| 5 | Nearly Caught | Responded well to pressure – as this tough gelding usually does – when winning this last year, the latest of his seven career wins. For some reason he wrecked his chance at Royal Ascot last month by racing much too keenly. He handles fast ground. |
| 6 | Platitude | Not yet fully proven over this distance but it is possible that he is happier since moving to his current stable and having a wind operation, as he appeared to deliver a near career-best when winning a 2800m handicap at Goodwood in May. Has won on fast ground. |
