Derby Stakes – Form Comments
| 1 | Dee Ex Bee | Has won two of his seven starts – including here at Epsom – but he posted a clear career best last time when runner-up to Young Rascal over 2500m in a G3 at Chester, especially good as he was forced wide around the tight bends there. |
| 2 | Delano Roosevelt | His close second in two 2000m G3’s at Leopardstown this season suggest he deserves a crack at The Derby. Most recently – in a race that has produced plenty of Derby winners – he pushed smart winner Hazapour hard late on. He looks strong on stamina. |
| 3 | Hazapour | Returned from a 197-day break to win a very respected Derby trial at Leopardstown, gradually closing from the back in that 2000m G3 and fending off the late thrust of Delano Roosevelt. His pedigree is positive about the rise to 2400m. |
| 4 | Kew Gardens | Has stamina and was still powerful at the end when leading nearly all the way in a 2000m Listed event at Newmarket last October. A hot favourite to win a fast-ground Listed event at Lingfield last month but Knight To Behold had stolen the lead and Kew Gardens could never peg him back. |
| 5 | Knight To Behold | Moved up to a trip just short of the Derby distance for his 2018 return in a fast-ground Listed event at Lingfield last month. Racing keenly, his jockey allowed him to lead 1600m out and some well regarded colts from higher profile stables were never able to reach him. |
| 6 | Masar | Raised his game dramatically with a powerful front-running display in a 1600m G3 at Newmarket in April, beating his nearest rival by 9L. He couldn’t boss in the same way in the 2,000 Guineas back at Newmarket, still running a good third. The biggest issue is stamina for 2400m, not certain on pedigree. |
| 7 | Roaring Lion | A G2 winner over 1600m at two, and, though twice behind Saxon Warrior since -latterly when 2 1/2L fifth in Newmarket’s 2,000 Guineas- he was a highly impressive G2 winner at York on his latest start when upped in distance. He’ll need to progress again up to 2400m, but it’s possible from this very talented colt. |
| 8 | Saxon Warrior | This powerful and unbeaten son of Deep Impact looks the potential superstar in this field. Beautifully settled, he quickened up in the centre of the track to easily beat 13 high class rivals in the 2,000 Guineas at Newmarket last month. That Classic G1 is over 1600m but breeding suggests a strong chance he’ll thrive at 2400m. |
| 9 | Sevenna Star | Has won both starts this year – each at around 2000m and on slow racing surfaces which seem to suit well. His latest win came with a battling effort in a G3 at Sandown in April, though the form of that race was not of the highest standard. Looks strong on stamina and likely to push forward early. |
| 10 | The Pentagon | A 1400m G3 winner at two, and a good third to stablemate Saxon Warrior in a 1600m Doncaster G1. Has started favourite for both 2018 starts, doing better on good ground last time when only 1L third to Hazapour in an influential Leopardstown G3 over 2000m. He raced prominently that day. |
| 11 | Young Rascal | Thrashed 19 rivals by 5L and upwards in a 2200m maiden at Newbury in April and then won a respected Derby trial at Chester last month. About 200m from the end, five looked as though they could win that but Young Rascal and Dee Ex Bee accelerated nicely clear late on. |
| 12 | Zabriskie | His only victory came in a 1500m maiden at Tipperary last September. He faded disappointingly in a Listed race here in April, but did much better when staying on from the back when third in a G2 at York last month. He’ll need to prove his stamina for this longer trip but should like the easy ground. |
