1000m – Turf

1 Duke Of Firenze Came from the back to win this race way back in 2013. He also finished third in it last year and after some generally disappointing starts since can compete off a lower handicap mark this time. He has won on both fast and slow ground.
2 Caspian Prince Has an amazing record in this fiercely competitive charge, having won it three times and is clearly ideally suited to this super-fast downhill track. He hasn’t been at his best for his last two starts but that was the same scenario before he won last year. Handicapped for another big show.
3 Equimou Has no Epsom experience unlike so many of her rivals here. She has three career wins – all at this distance – and she proved she could handle Group race company when running way ahead of her odds of 40-1 to finish a close fourth in a G3 at Newmarket last month.
4 Edward Lewis Only beaten 1L in fifth in this last year when failing to get a clear passage in a sprint in which some luck is at a premium.  He races off a lower handicap mark compared to then so looks to have a chance especially as he ran really well at York last week.
5 Blue De Vega His two career wins came over 1400m on slow ground. However, more recently, he has shown plenty of speed at shorter trips for his current trainer. Always prominent and thrusting late he only just failed to win a 1000m Thirsk handicap last time.
6 Desert Law His fast late charge saw him win this famous prize in 2015, though it was off a lower handicap mark. He’s been quite well beaten in his three starts this year and, reaching the veteran stage now, may struggle to supplement that 2015 win.
7 Pettochside This locally-trained old boy has been a great stable servant with 12 wins, though his only Epsom win came over 1200m. Despite his age he probably posted a career best when scoring at Goodwood (1000m) last month. Slow ground suits.
8 Boom The Groom Hasn’t won since August 2016 but has slipped down the weights and shaped as though another win may be coming soon when fourth here in April, having to wait for a run but finishing very powerfully. Drying conditions would be in his favour.
9 Tarboosh Started to hit form at around this time last year and promptly won four handicap sprints over this distance and on a variety of different ground conditions. Although he has struggled off a higher handicap rating since, his run here in April can be forgotten as he had a dreadful passage.
10 Storm Over A lightly-race colt but he has won three of his six starts and he will like the slow ground that is now expected. He faded from a prominent position on his 2018 return at Newmarket but should be sharper now. His stable specialise with sprinters.
11 Dark Shot A slightly unlucky loser in this race last year as he was slowly away and met trouble in running but still got to within a short-head of winner Caspian Prince at the wire. He warmed up for this when almost landing a shock victory in a handicap over this trip at York.
12 Harry Hurricane Beaten in his last 14 starts but he has run well on various occasions in that period including when a close fifth here in April. He’s certainly well handicapped now if managing to recapture his very best form. Best suited by good ground.
13 Just That Lord His two starts at this track have both been good. Most recently he showed his customary early speed and then battled hard when headed, finishing a close 3rd of 13 here in April, a race in which other of today’s rivals featured.
14 Verne Castle His five wins have all come on an all-weather surface and he is 0-11 on turf which is a bit worrying. Prominent for much of the way, he didn’t run badly when fifth of eight at Newmarket last month. Facing Epsom’s downhill gradients for the first time.
15 Super Julius Has won just three of his 20 starts and is untried at Epsom though he has won at Brighton which has similarities, almost winning a handicap sprint at that track two starts back. Less good more recently when last of eight at Windsor.
16 Tanasoq He comes here on a winning streak having landed two 1000m handicaps in quick succession last month, at Ayr and Thirsk. Both of those were on fast ground, conditions not expected here, but at least we know he is in warm form.
17 Lucky Beggar Down the field in a 1200m handicap at this meeting in 2017, his only previous Epsom experience. Chances here if repeating his 2018 debut run, only failing by a short-head in a 16-runner sprint handicap at Doncaster in April. That was on soft ground.
18 Bahamian Sunrise Has an immaculate record on this track, winning on his only start here – landing a competitive Epsom handicap in April though avoiding some of the traffic trouble that his rivals got into. He sometimes leads but those tactics didn’t work last time, at Goodwood.
19 Shamshon Beaten in 16 starts since he came with a late surge to land a 1000m handicap at Newmarket in July 2017. He did run really well – again finishing strongly – when only just beaten here in April and finishing ahead of many of today’s rivals.
20 Aleef Well behind plenty of these rivals when well down the field here in April, with no apparent excuses. Can lead, and front-running tactics proved successful on his only turf win – over 1200m at Newmarket back in 2016.
