1400m – Dirt

1 Galvanize The winner of two 1600m handicaps here late last year. Showed he was still in warm form when running second – leading for much of the journey – in a 1900m handicap earlier this month. Drops to a trip he hasn’t competed over since very early in his career.
2 Pirate’s Cove Inconsistent, one good run often followed by a poor one. Two starts ago he was in grand form, leading and quickening in the straight to romp clear of his 12 rivals over 1200m here, only to weaken rapidly in a similar event subsequently. No worries at this longer trip so perhaps it’s time for another good run.
3 Secret Ambition Twice a narrow winner of handicaps – including over this distance – earlier this Meydan season and he also ran a good fourth in a turf handicap on his latest start. He likes to race right up with the speed so gate one could be positive for him.
4 Jayed Jidan It is over three years since he won a race, and he has often disappointed. Most recently he returned from a lengthy absence to run way down the field over 1200m here. An unlikely winner on all the evidence.
5 Musawaat A useful performer in the UK, winning two of his seven starts, most recently in a turf handicap over this distance at Newmarket last August. Not seen since last September but he has ran well off a break before and maybe the bigger issue is the switch to this Meydan dirt surface.
6 San Dimas Fairly useful over a variety of distances and surfaces in the USA. This gelding has made very little impact in two starts at Jebel Ali this year so it takes some extreme optimism to give him any live chances here especially from a wide gate.
7 Nathr Has won Meydan handicaps in each of the last three seasons, though no obvious signs from his runs at UAE tracks in the last few months – beaten a long way each time – that another Meydan win is just around the corner.
8 Speedy Move Comfortable both on a dirt and a turf surface though he hasn’t actually won a race for nearly two years. Never far from the front he ran a decent fourth of 16 in a handicap on turf over this distance earlier this month.
9 Taqneen Hasn’t been seen since competing at the minor UAE racecourse of Al Ain back in 2016 and he did win a dirt handicap there over 1600m after leading early. Not an obvious candidate for the winners’ money this time.
10 Spring Offensive Housed with top trainer Richard Fahey he raced exclusively on turf in the UK, winning four times including at this 1400m distance. Not disgraced on his first Meydan start this month though it is still hard to consider him a serious player here.
11 Tafaakhor Not a prolific winner with just two victories from 21 starts and a record of 0-8 on artificial surfaces like this. He did briefly look like winning a 1600m turf handicap here last month but ran out of fuel in the closing stages.
12 Treasured Times This four-year-old colt has raced just three times, and on the second of those starts he was kicked clear in the closing stages to win a 1600m turf maiden at Abu Dhabi last month. Not so good on the dirt at Jebel Ali subsequently and the chances are that he’ll struggle here.
