1400m – Dirt

1 Kimbear Useful in the USA and trainer Doug Watson promised to have him very fit for his Meydan debut. And so he did as Kimbear ran out a comfortable winner of that 1600m handicap in January. Ran another good race earlier this month, with a muddling pace probably not ideal. This drop in trip should be fine. Chances.
2 Spitzbergen Came from off the speed to win at Bro Park in Sweden last November. Whilst competing at a good level in Scandanavia, Meydan raiders from that part of the world rarely make a big impact and Sptizbergen never got a look-in when a remote seventh on last month’s debut here.
3 Raven’s Corner Won at this meeting last year, kicking from the front and never looking in much difficulty. Had blinkers added for his latest start having been a bit reluctant at the gates, running a solid third though doing a lot of work early on during a fast gallop and running out of gas late on.
4 Adventurous A smart two-year-old in the UK, including showing a good aptitude for an artificial surface. His current in-form trainer is hoping to get him back to that level now but he’ll clearly need to improve plenty from his debut Meydan run – on turf last month where he led but dropped right out.
5 Nobelium A cheap purchase prior to his debut, that almost looking a major bargain as he had looked sure to win that 1400m turf event here about a year ago – just worried out of the winners’ money late on. He has run some fair races on turf and dirt since but was always struggling last time. Mucus was subsequently found, a plausible excuse.
6 Portamento Better known as a sprinter in the UK, his five wins – two on all-weather surfaces -all coming over 1000m and 1200m. He was a long way behind the winner in his first four UAE starts – last year and earlier in 2018 – but did run much better in a 1400m Meydan turf handicap more recently.
7 Shaishee Disappointing in three starts at Jebel Ali last year after joining this stable. However he’s run well at Meydan before including over this course and distance at this meeting last year when fourth after having to cover plenty of ground from his wide draw. Better positioned this time.
8 Silver Look Raced at a high level in Argentina, but she has been beaten a long way both in one race in France last year and two at Meydan this year. Very hard to fancy.
