G1 – 2000m – Turf

1

Medjool

Chilean contender handed the number one gate in this week’s draw. Winner of 11 of his 22 starts, including a pair of G2s at home this year and ran into a minor place in a G1, all over 2000m.

2

Seiquevouteamar

Stall 2 will suit this fast-breaking 4yo colt. Has two wins at this course under his belt, including his G2 prep in September. He will likely have to up his game though to make an impact against this array of G1 stars.

3

Need You Tonight

One of two Argentina raiders is a class act and significantly has a 2000m G1 double to his name earlier this year. Tuned up and confirmed his well being when a fighting second trying 2400m. Top rated of the 16 runners.

4

Kanko

This 5yo could struggle to provide Peru with their second successive Latinoamericano, stepping up in class from G3 level. Normally races over trips shorter than this.

5

Obataye

Notched up his eighth win from 16 in fighting fashion to swoop close home and land a G1 over 2000m in Sao Paulo in August to confirm his claims on this South American showpiece. Won the Gran Premio Brasil at this top level over 2400m at Gavea last year. From stall 5 sure to have plenty of supporters.

6

Vundu

The racing barrier gods smiled on this Argentinian contender, who has drawn one of the favourable inside berths in six, perfect for his front running style. Already a G1 over this distance on turf he arrives in great shape seeking a three-timer.

7

Ethereum

Leading Brazil’s four-pronged attempt to keep the continent’s most prestigious prize from export she was named Brazilian champion 2yo, 3yo and horse of the year. Attractive mid-field draw and suited by likely rain-softened ground. Course specialist.

8

Il Omare

He will have invaluable assistance from the saddle with last year’s winning jockey Carlos Trujillo on board. The 4yo will need all the help he can get being the lowest rated of the 16-runner field.

9

Gracie

Joins the Latinoamericano party as one of two late supplementary guests. Starts from stall nine this 4yo home-based colt trailed in last but one in a G1 over 2400m at this track on soft ground in June.

10

Boudica

Only one of two ladies in the male-dominated cast this 5yo representing Peru arrives in Rio with a 2024 G1 win over 2000m in her suitcase and she sealed her ticket with an eyecatching success in her G3 (2000m) warm-up.

11

Happy Man

Ultra consistent, winning five and making the frame six times in a dozen starts. Should go well but a tough test against this top notch competition.

12

Daktari

Not expected to be at the thick of the action in the business end judged on official ratings. Won a G3 (1900m) and Listed contest (2000m) in his native Chile this year. Finished last in the 2024 edition run on dirt in Peru.

13

King Mo

Another of Peru’s six-strong contingent and on paper perhaps their weakest link. Handed an outside draw. Picked up wins in two handicaps over 1900m and 1800m this year before disappointing at G3 (2000m) level.

14

Enforceable

At 8yos this American-bred Peruvian based runner is the old man of the field. Earned his ticket when landing a prestigious G1 over 2400m. Fifth in a G3 prep on last outing.

15

Olympic Olympic

Put a disappointing effort behind him when this Brazilian-bred 4yo got his head in front in a 2100m Listed contest, a recognised Latinoamericano trial, back home in Uruguay last month, battling bravely to the line.

16

My Way

One of Chile’s three-strong team is drawn widest of all in 16 so a good getaway is crucial with a short run to the first bend. Others preferred.
