Treasurethe Moment aims for another moment to treasure in G1 Might And Power

Redemption looms on Saturday (11 October) when Treasurethe Moment, who has 10 wins and three seconds from 13 starts, faces off against three rivals in the G1 Might And Power (Caulfield Stakes) (2000m) at Caulfield.

Treasurethe Moment’s reputation suffered the slightest of dents when her sequence of nine consecutive victories was ended in dramatic style by another champion mare, Pride Of Jenni, in the G2 Feehan Stakes (1600m) at Moonee Valley on 26 September.

Any concerns that Pride Of Jenni hadn’t returned to her best were quickly erased when she adopted her customary “catch me if you can” tactics to claim victory.

Treasurethe Moment chased hard and looked like she was going to haul in Pride Of Jenni, who hung on for a gutsy one-and-three-quarters-length win.

Trainer Matt Laurie admitted the defeat was a bitter pill to swallow.

“I was pretty disappointed at the time; I don’t like losing any race,” Laurie said.

He admits he would have liked a bigger field for Saturday’s race, which originally attracted nine nominations, but is happy to have regular rider Damian Lane back on the filly after he missed the ride in the Feehan Stakes because of suspension.

“I would prefer it if there were more runners on Saturday, because I find it’s a harder watch with the small fields and you can sometimes come unstuck. But Damian gets on so well with her and we do think she’s getting back to the mark, so hopefully they can knock off another Group 1 together,” he said.

Treasurethe Moment will strip fitter for her second placing after going into the race without a run for nearly a month. She was ruled out of the G1 Makybe Diva Stakes (1600m) after suffering a mild case of colic.

Already with four Group 1 and three Group 2 victories, the four-year-old filly has a perfect record at Caulfield with three wins from three races at the track.

Chris Waller-trained Buckaroo is expected to pose the biggest challenge to Treasurethe Moment. The former Irish galloper’s last victory came in the G1 Underwood Stakes (1800m) at Caulfield in September, 2024. He was denied back-to-back victories in the race last Saturday when he finished a narrow second to Sir Delius.

Buckaroo was also second in last year’s G1 Caulfield Cup (2400m) and Waller’s racing manager Charlie Duckworth said they had opted for the Might And Power for Buckaroo over the Turnbull Stakes but conceded any Group 1 was difficult to win.

“On early markets you’d think the hardest to beat is going to be Treasurethe Moment,” Duckworth said.

“All Group 1 races are hard so you’ve got to place them where they are best suited and he is best suited in that race.”

James McDonald replaces Blake Shinn on Buckaroo.

Mick Price and Michael Kent Jnr have two runners in Saturday’s race – Globe and long shot Hezashocka.

With only four runners, Price acknowledged Globe, who will be ridden by Shinn, has been beaten in open handicaps, but was attracted to the fact that his horse looms as the only leader in the small field.

“That’s the attraction for Globe, that he gets left alone,” Price said.

“He’s not as good as the others, but it doesn’t matter. He’ll bowl along in front; he’ll give plenty of cheek.”

Globe has raced once over 2000m when he finished third, beaten half a length, in last year’s Ballarat Cup.
