Alert to the possibility of a slower than expected tempo, Alexis Badel will trade on Cordyceps Six’s versatility and devastating acceleration as the pair bids for G3 National Day Cup Handicap (1000m) honours at Sha Tin on Saturday (1 October).
Bidding to continue the form which delivered five wins from nine starts last season and a rise in the handicaps from 60 to 107, Cordyceps Six marched from Class 4 to Group 3 victory in 2021/22 – often with barnstorming finishes.
Badel won the 2021 National Day Cup on Super Wealthy – who combines tomorrow with Zac Purton – and believes Cordyceps Six has the scope to sit closer behind expected leader Harmony And Rich if the circumstances warrant in the seven-horse field before unleashing powerfully.
“I don’t think the pace will be overly quick because it’s a small field and a few horses in the race need to relax a little bit to be able to finish the race off,” the Frenchman said. “I think there’s only one or two potential leaders, so they might not be burning themselves as a bigger field could.
“I’m happy with where I’m drawn (barrier one) because it gives me the opportunity to get a clear run if the pace is not fast enough for me.”
