The Licensing Committee resolved to:
- grant an extension of licence to Club Jockeys Vagner Borges, Neil Callan and Blake Shinn for the period from 15 February 2021 to the conclusion of the current 2020/2021 racing season, both dates inclusive;
- grant an extension of licence to Club Jockey Tony Piccone for the period from 1 March 2021 to the conclusion of the current 2020/2021 racing season, both dates inclusive; and
- grant, subject to the usual formalities, a Club Jockey’s licence to Ruan Maia for the period from 1 March 2021 to the conclusion of the current 2020/2021 racing season, both dates inclusive.
PROFILE – Ruan Maia
Brazilian jockey Ruan Maia (32 years) has a highly successful riding career of 16 years and was a leading rider in Brazil before setting sights on an international career by moving to Macau in 2016. During the only two full seasons he completed in Macau, he claimed the Jockeys’ title (2017/2018 and 2018/2019) with 60 and 71 wins respectively. He subsequently took the opportunity to shift base to Singapore where he quickly made an impact having been narrowly beaten by just 3 wins in the 2020 Singapore Jockeys’ Championship in his first season. During the 12 months he has ridden in Singapore, Jockey Maia has recorded 69 wins at a winning strike rate of 18.5%. Included in those wins were domestic Group 1 victories on ARAMAAYO in the 2020 Kranji Mile and the 2020 Raffles Cup. Another significant career milestone was achieved at the Kranji race meeting on 23 August 2020 where Jockey Maia rode 7 winners on the program. In all, he has ridden in excess of 600 winners including 7 at Group 1 level. Jockey Maia’s minimum riding weight is 116 lbs.
