KOR G1 – 1200m – Sand

The Truth Or Else US-trained six-time winner on dirt from 32 career starts (29 on dirt). In good form this term, winning the Listed Shackleton Stakes over 1400m at Gulfstream Park in April. Followed up with solid performances in smart company at Churchill Downs including 3rd in G3 Aristides Stakes (1200m) in June. Six-lengths 7th in 1300m turf contest on 22 July latest.
Doraonpogyeongseon Victorious in 7 of 14 so far. Finished strongly to win the SBS Sports Sprint at the course and distance in a tight three-way photo finish in June. Struggled when upped to 1800m at Busan the following month but should be much more at home here.
Zentenary Six wins from 32 outings, and while Class 1 is tough for him, he occasionally pulls off a surprise such as a win on Christmas Eve last year and a 3rd place in June, both at this distance. Last race was at Kranji in Singapore where he finished 9th of 12 in the KRA Trophy (1200m, Polytrack) and he’s up against it here.
Lucky Year A 1200m specialist recording all of his 8 wins over this distance. His most notable victory was his latest in May this year when he landed the G3 Sha Tin Vase. Unraced on anything but turf but has trialled well on Sha Tin’s dirt surface. If he takes to the track, he has to be in with a chance.
Gasokbulpae A winner of seven from 16 career starts, all on sand. Takes his chance here having broken the track record at this distance last time out, on 12 August. The mark was broken a week later in a month of fast times at Seoul but the five-length win, over solid local sprinters, certainly caught the eye. If he gets a fast start, anything could happen.
Drop The Beat A winner of 4 from 9 so far and remains on the way up following two recent nice Class 2 wins over this distance at Busan most recently on 18 August. He sat behind the early leaders that day before cruising to the front on the turn and easing to a five-length win. Needless to say, this won’t be so straightforward.
Graceful Leap A seven-year-old winner of 8 from 36 lifetime starts, 35 on dirt, with a Listed Handicap among them. Four outings this year with reasonable returns despite no wins, all at 1400m including 5th of 11 in latest at Saga in August. Merits respect and Yutaka Take is set to ride.
Haeya She won her first four races before suffering some minor injury setbacks. Hasn’t won in three starts since but has gone close, recently  with a good 2nd to Silver Wolf in the KOR G2 Ttukseom Cup over 1400m at the course and a 3rd in the KNN Cup (1600m, Busan). Going too fast too early was her undoing in both of those but dropped back to 1200m may well suit.
Tohamsan A solid Class 1 horse. He got his first win at that level over 1400m at Busan in May. Latest outing resulted in 2nd of 12 behind a surprise winner on 25 June, again at 1400m. Drops down to 1200m for the first time since his fourth ever start.
Wimbledon The Singapore-trained 6-year-old has won seven of his 32 starts to date with two wins and eight places from 12 Polytrack runs. He’s been Stakes-placed on a number of occasions and comes in following a close 2nd to Faaltless in a Kranji turf G3 at the distance. Has good early speed which could be crucial.
Beolmaui Kkum One of the most naturally talented horses to race in Korea but hasn’t had the big race success expected of him. He went very quickly in the early stages of the KOR G1 Korea Cup (1800m) last year before fading. Drops back to the Sprint this time round but has been well beaten in each of three starts (2000m, 1200m, 1800m) this year, so will have to defy recent form if he is to do well.
Open The Sky Missed out in three outings as a juvenile but reappeared six months later, gelded and is unbeaten since. Made it five in a row when making all for a 3-length Class 3 win over 1800m at Busan on 6 August. Yet another who will most likely want to lead, this is by far his sternest test to date.
Silver Wolf Seven wins from 16 career starts, all on sand. Good form in only three starts this year. Won the KOR G2 Ttukseom Cup (1400m) at Seoul and KOR G3 KNN Cup (1600m) at Busan at her last two starts. Runs best from just behind the early speed. Drops in trip for first start at 1200m. Raced once at 1000m on career debut. Top candidate for Korea’s champion filly/mare title.
Power Blade Korean Triple Crown winner in 2016 before heading off to Dubai to run creditably at this year’s Carnival, including 3rd in G2 Al Maktoum Challenge R2 (1900m, dirt). Returned to domestic action with a defeat of stablemate Triple Nine in a KOR G3 race over a mile at Busan last month. Tries 1200m for the first time since he was a 2-year-old. So long as he doesn’t give himself too much to do, he can be a real danger.
Perdido Pomeroy Eight wins from 16 career starts. Led in the early stages of this race last year, ultimately finishing 4th. He seemed to lose his way a little afterwards but has come back into form of late. Followed up his 5th behind Doraonpogyeongseon in the SBS Sports Sprint at the course and distance with consecutive victories over 1200m at Busan heading into this race. It would be no surprise to see him up front early again this year.
