1

Jan Van Goyen

G1 Cape Guineas (1600m) winner was highly fancied when stepping into open company for January’s G1 King’s Plate (1600m) but could only manage 12th. Can return to his best against his own age and is a strong winning chance.

2

Splittheeights

Exciting colt will look to add victory in the second leg of the South African Triple Crown to his success in the first leg – the G2 Gauteng Guineas (1600m) – last month, where he hit the line in a manner that suggested he could be even better suited here. Top chance.

3

Grand Empire

Beat home a stack of this weekend’s rivals when running second behind Splittheeights in the main lead-up to this contest, the G2 Gauteng Guineas (1600m), on 7 February. One of the leading hopes from a good draw.

4

Trust

Also comes out of the first leg of the South African Triple Crown, running a close third in the G2 Gauteng Guineas (1600m). Looks open to improvement and can also figure in the second leg here.

5

One Eye On Vegas

Crossed the line in third in the G2 Gauteng Guineas (1600m) before being demoted to fourth and has been racing in strong form for a sustained period. Looks one of the potential improvers and must be considered.

6

Yippee Kiyay

Strode out to a massive lead from gate one in the G2 Gauteng Guineas (1600m) before sticking on fairly solidly for fifth. Tactics from the outside alley here will be interesting and he’s not without hope of running a place.

7

All Systems Go

Crossed the line a distant seventh in the G2 Gauteng Guineas (1600m) on 7 February and will need to find significant improvement to be in the finish here. Outside place hope.

8

Errol Flynn

Lightly-raced galloper who boasts different formlines to many of his opponents, winning twice from two starts in much lesser company to kick off 2026. Step up in trip could suit but would need to improve considerably to figure on a win line. Place hope.

9

Radio Star

Finished almost 11 lengths off Splittheeights in the G2 Gauteng Guineas (1600m) on 7 February and he looks unlikely to be able to turn the tables so quickly. Prefer others.
