Tentyris must carry record weight to win Group 1 Newmarket Handicap

Boom colt Tentyris will need to equal a 1938 weight-carrying record for a three-year-old if the son of Street Boss is to win Saturday’s (7 March) G1 Newmarket Handicap (1200m) at Flemington in Melbourne, Australia.

Already with two Group 1 wins down the famous Flemington straight – the Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m) to finish his last campaign and most recently a first-up win in the Lightning Stakes (1000m) – Tentyris has been allocated 126lb.

The last three-year-old to carry that weight to victory in a Newmarket Handicap was Hall of Fame galloper Ajax 88 years ago.

It is rare for a young horse to be given so much weight, but Tentyris has shown enormous acceleration to overhaul his rivals after settling last in most of his eight races, which have netted five wins, a second and a third for HK$14 million in prize money.

As well as conceding weight to older and more seasoned rivals, three-year-old filly My Gladiola, who has finished second to Tentyris both times during their last two Flemington duels, will carry just 111lb.

Seven-year-old Baraqiel will carry the top weight of 127lb.

Sam Freedman, who trains in partnership with his father Anthony, said Tentyris’ record down the Flemington straight is excellent – three wins and a third from four attempts.

“The plan from the whole through is to go Lightning (Stakes) and Newmarket and everything has gone to plan so far, so I think everyone wants to see a horse like that in the Newmarket,” he said.

“He will still carry a fair bit of weight regardless of what he is allocated. He is not going to be given a light three-year-old’s weight, so it takes a very good horse to carry that weight and win. But hopefully we have got the right horse for it.”

Freedman said Tentyris was the ultimate professional and getting better in his racecraft and the way he is tracking his races.

The Chris Waller-trained Angel Capital and Bjorn Baker’s Caballus are expected to offer the biggest challenges to the more fancied runners.

Hong Kong’s Karis Teetan was booked to ride Waller’s Wodeton, but was replaced after being stranded in Dubai by Wayne Lordan.

The Newmarket Handicap is carded as S2-2 and will be run at 1.55pm (Hong Kong time) on Saturday, 7 March.
