Jerry Chau continued his remarkable run of form at Happy Valley on Wednesday night (11 February), riding a treble to surge into fourth place in the jockeys’ standings and take charge in the race for the Tony Cruz Award contest.

Chau has enjoyed a phenomenal start to 2026, having bagged 12 winners since the turn of the year, including eight already in February.

The night started promisingly for the Hongkonger when he piloted David Eustace’s Inno Super (122lb) to victory in the Class 4 Tseuk Luk Handicap (1650m), the four-year-old breaking through for the first time after several solid showings, much to the Englishman’s delight.

“He’s been gradually improving with each run,” Eustace said. “Obviously, he got a really nice setup today and a well-timed drive from Jerry. But I felt like he’s put in a winning performance a couple of times this season, so it was nice to get his head in front.

“He’s reasonably versatile now. And I think he can continue to progress,” the second-year trainer added.

Chau brought up his double courtesy of a superbly timed charge on Manfred Man’s Bunta Baby (130lb) in the Class 4 Sze Mei Handicap (1000m), guiding the five-year-old out of a congested midfield pack to drive impressively to the line for his second win from 14 starts.

He netted his hat-trick when Flying Wrote (131lb) held on to claim the second section of the Class 4 Sheung Hei Handicap (1200m) with Meowth (135lb) and The Heir (127lb) closing fast.

“I got very good draws tonight, the horses performed very well and I’m very happy,” Chau said.

“I need to thank the owners and trainers for their support of me this season. This month, the draws and races have been going well for me, and I’m very grateful for all of this. Hopefully, the luck keeps coming and I can keep riding more winners,” he added.

It was the perfect send-off for the product of The Hong Kong Jockey Club’s Apprentice Jockeys’ School, who now jets out to Riyadh, where he will ride Man’s Self Improvement in Saturday night’s (14 February) G2 Riyadh Dirt Sprint (1200m, dirt) at King Abdulaziz Racecourse.

Richard Kingscote picked up a double to take his seasonal tally to seven. A banner night for him began aboard Run Run Timing (131lb) in the Class 5 Ng Fong Handicap (1650m), when he delivered a second win in 29 starts for the Ricky Yiu trainee.

He then brought up his double with a patient effort on Master Resolute (124lb) in the first section of the Class 4 Sheung Hei Handicap (1200m) for trainer Danny Shum.

After enduring an exasperating first half of the season, Kingscote was relieved to repay some of the support he’s received.

“The start was very slow with a lot of seconds, which was frustrating, but fortunately, I’ve been able to keep hold of some support and those guys who have kept supporting me are thankfully getting some reward,” said the 2022 Epsom Derby winner.

Macanese Master made it two wins from three when he burst clear in the closing stages of the Class 5 Sung Ling Handicap (1000m) after a typical front-running display under Angus Chung for Me Tsui.

Eustace cemented his brace when Mister Dapper took out the night’s trophy race, the Class 3 The Consensus Cup Handicap (1650m). The son of Tivaci scored his fifth Hong Kong win from 28 starts thanks to a driving ride from Brenton Avdulla, who powered the gelding over the line under a late onslaught from fast-finishing favourite Max Que (134lb).

Brett Crawford’s incredible debut season in Hong Kong rolled on as he linked up with old ally Karis Teetan for his 15th win of the season, and his ninth with Teetan, this time on Sovereign Fund (126lb). Only recently placed under the South African’s care, the five-year-old, who was runner-up in the Listed Gold Coast Magic Millions 3YO Guineas (1400m) before moving to Hong Kong, took out the second section of the Class 3 Sam Chuk Handicap (1200m).

Cody Mo and Matthew Poon combined to take the card-closing first section of the Class 3 Sam Chuk Handicap (1200m) as Lucky Planet (126lb) powered clear of Beauty Glory (117lb).

Hong Kong Racing continues at Sha Tin on Saturday (14 February).
