The Hong Kong Jockey Club purchased four attractive colts from Book 1 (7-9 October) at the recent Tattersalls October Yearling Sale in Newmarket, Great Britain for a total outlay of GNS1.07 million (approx. HK$11.74 million).

A striking bay, sold as Lot 31, was the first to fall the Club’s way for GNS260,000. The youngster is by the late Wootton Bassett, sire of Group 1 stars Almanzor, King Of Steel, Whirl and Al Riffa, among others. The colt’s dam Aquamarine, a Group 3 winning daughter of Deep Impact has produced four winners including the colt’s half-sibling All Rumours – a stakes winner in France and was also placed in three Group 3s.

Lot 58 was also secured for GNS260,000, a bay colt by Too Darn Hot, whose Hong Kong-based progeny is led by young gun Ka Ying Attack – a three-time winner from seven appearances. The yearling’s dam Best Friend is a sister to triple Group 1 winner Lush Lashes, while his siblings Miss Cynthia, Deep Water Bay and Arcadian Friend are all winners.

Lot 282 was bought for GNS290,000 – the Club’s highest-priced purchase. The colt is by Starspangledbanner, sire of Group 1 winners California Spangle and Beauty Eternal, while fellow progeny Copartner Ambition, Beauty Waves, Drombeg Banner and Hong Kong International Sale graduate Nordic Dragon have also won five or more races in Hong Kong.

The Club’s fourth and final purchase came as Lot 398, another bay colt for GNS260,000 by sire Starspangledbanner. The youngster’s dam Sangria won once, while he has close ties to seven-time winner Muqbil and Japan’s well-travelled top-level performer Matera Sky.
