A mix of European equine talent on show in Sunday’s Group 1 Munich feature

A high-class field of eleven has been declared to run in the G1 Grosser Preis Bayerisches Zuchtrennen (2000m) at Munich on Sunday (27 July).

It is an intriguing mix of three-year-olds and older horses, male and female and domestic and international contenders.

Map Of Stars (James Doyle) is the highest-rated, and the Wathnan Racing-owned four-year-old colt is from the Chantilly stable of Francis-Henri Graffard, whose team is in terrific form.

Although slightly below his best when fourth in Royal Ascot’s G1 Prince Of Wales’s Stakes (1993m), the son of Sea The Stars did not look to thrive on the fast ground that day. However, a Group 1 breakthrough seems to be just a matter of time for this winner of five from eight career starts.

Lazio (Martin Seidl) flies the flag for the German Classic crop. An unbeaten two-year-old, he ran an excellent third in this month’s G1 Deutsches Derby (2400m) at Hamburg, with hopes that the drop back in trip could be a plus for the Waldemar Hickst-trained colt.

There will be plenty of interest also in the other three-year-old, Godolphin’s Saeed Bin Suroor-trained Tornado Alert, who is the mount of in-form jockey Oisin Murphy. He was second to Trinity College in Royal Ascot’s G3 Hampton Court Stakes (1993m), and the value of that performance was enhanced when Trinity College got to within a short-head of landing this month’s G1 Grand Prix de Paris at ParisLongchamp (2400m).

As a 48-1 outsider, Calif (Adrie de Vries) ran an excellent third to Tastiera in April’s G1 FWD QEII Cup (2000m) at Sha Tin. He looks the best of the three six-year-olds in the Munich feature as he bids to become the first horse since the late 1990 to win this prize in two consecutive years.

The most popular winner would surely be the nine-year-old Quest The Moon. He brought the house down, showing that age is just a number, as he surged from the back to win the G3 Grosser Preis von Lotto Hamburg (2000m) earlier this month. The horse and owner are both Munich-based, and trainer Sarah Steinberg says: “He is our heart horse and never disappoints. He is at his best at this time of year and is likely to get his ground on Sunday (with a lot of rain forecast). He came out of Hamburg really well, so why not go on one more adventure together?”
