1203m – Turf

1

Apollo One

Debut for this sprinter at this unusual track. Made a promising return to action when – despite not having the best of passages – he finished third of 21 at Newmarket last month.

2

Probe

Looks improved since moving from Ireland to this stable, winning two of his three starts and posting a clear career best with a convincing 1200m victory at Newmarket last month. A rising handicap mark may not stop his progress.

3

Badri

Most of his runs and wins have come on all-weather surfaces but he did sweep past rivals to win a 1000m dash at Beverley in April. Burdened with an 8lb higher mark here.

4

Mr Wagyu

Improved with age and in terrific form when narrowly winning this sprint last year – racing off just a 2lb higher mark this time. This 15-times winner seems happy on any ground.

5

Strike Red

A specialist at this trip but versatile as far as the surface is concerned. Awkward at the start at Newmarket on his 2023 return but in the circumstances ran decently to finish sixth of 21.

6

Baldomero

Yet to win from nine attempts on a turf surface. He did manage to finish third in a soft-ground Ascot handicap on his latest start but was well behind the first two.

7

Haymaker

Despite an awkward start and racing too keenly he was the winner of a Windsor handicap sprint last month, looking happy on the quick ground then. Competitively handicapped for this first start at Epsom.

8

Spring Bloom

His two runs this season – in 1000m Newmarket handicaps – both look like career best performances, latterly when winning despite flashing his tail when the whip was used. Best on fast ground.

9

Many A Star

Favourite for this last year but reared as the gates opened and was fighting a losing battle after that. Some lively subsequent 2022 efforts included a fast-ground Goodwood sprint success.

10

Venturous

This veteran gelding is a 13-times winner in a 77-race career but having a belated first-ever run at Epsom. Proved that he still had speed when a close second in a 1200m handicap on his latest start.

11

Night On Earth

An eight-time winner who seems best on a fast surface and comes from a stable with a very good record in this sprint. Led at a fast pace in this race last year but didn’t handle the bend and faded.

12

Indian Creak

Performing consistently in recent starts including a win and a place over this trip at Windsor. Plenty of encouraging Epsom performances in the past also.

13

Count Otto

Has some quite encouraging form here and won an Epsom sprint handicap back in 2019. Returned to his best when landing a 40-1 victory on Lingfield’s all-weather track in March.

14

The Defiant

Has only won two of his 30 turf starts. He is harshly treated according to the weights of this handicap, so a win would appear very unlikely.

2405m – Turf

1

Lucander

Came from the back to win a valuable event – a local G2 – in Bahrain in February. Having his first career start at Epsom and not beaten far in a hot York handicap last time.

2

Caius Chorister

Led throughout to win over this course and distance last year, and again ran well at this track when second in a handicap here on her 2023 return, again ridden aggressively.

3

Max Mayhem

Having his first start for a new stable after a six month break, he charged down the outside to win quite a valuable all-weather handicap at Kempton. Proven on turf also, with good ground preferred.

4

Jungle Cove

A four-time winner, this Irish challenger will try this trip for the first time. Didn’t make much impact on his first start this season, but had delivered a strong challenge to win an Ascot handicap last August.

5

Scampi

Made smooth headway from the back to win a handicap over this course and distance last July. Gained another win at York on his latest start and chances here despite competing off a career high handicap mark.

6

Sea King

Although twice a winner he is yet to live up to a big reputation, often travelling really well before proving weak at the finish. Perhaps the cheekpieces applied here will help.

7

Sheer Rocks

Looked an unlikely winner for most of the trip but showed plenty of zip in the straight to land an Ascot handicap last month. Slow ground that day, but has won on much quicker ground before.

8

Haliphon

A strong challenge in the straight almost won him this prize last year, then winning handicaps on his next two starts. Will need to improve on his two runs this year.

9

Green Team

Well beaten in his starts at Meydan earlier in the year, and at Ascot last time. Not surprisingly his handicap mark is sliding, but he is still difficult to recommend.
