The Appeal lodged by Jockey S De Sousa against the decision made by the Racing Stewards on 19 March 2023 to suspend him from riding in races from 26 March 2023 to 2 April 2023 (three Hong Kong race days), and to fine him $60,000 for careless riding [Rule 100(1)] when riding SOARING TOWER in Race 1 on 19 March 2023, was heard by the Stewards of the Jockey Club at 2:30 p.m. on 31 March 2023.  Jockey De Sousa appealed against both the finding and the penalty imposed.

The Appeal Panel carefully considered all the evidence taken in this case together with further statements taken at the hearing today.

The Panel dismissed the Appeal against the conviction.  However, the Panel decided to waive the fine and reduce the suspension to two Hong Kong race days which will run from 12 to 15 April 2023.  Jockey De Sousa may resume riding in races on 16 April 2023.  The Panel further ordered the deposit be refunded.
