G1 – 2000m – Turf

1

Golden Ducat

A two-time Grade 1 winner, he is distance suited having won the Cape Derby over course and distance. Place chance.

2

Make It Snappy

The three-year-old filly is already a dual Grade 1 winner, she must be considered a serious contender carrying a very light weight.

3

Marina

This five-year-old daughter of Silvano finished eighth in the Met last year and is expected to produce a similar performance this time round.

4

Jet Dark

A top-class performer who has four Grade 1 wins in his form line. Produced the fastest finish last year to run second and has to be a massive contender this year.

5

Sparkling Water

The heroine of the Durban July could add the Met to her impressive record. The only question is whether 2000m is not a bit short.

6

Kommetdieding

The defending champion and unquestionably one of the best and most popular horses in South Africa. Had a great warm-up run and is a massive contender.

7

Universal

From his three prep-runs this season, the Met is the main target, so don’t be surprised if he pops up close to the front of the field when it matters most.

8

Do It Again

Gallant eight-year-old who will be running in his fifth Met.  Rarely far off the winner, has a top jockey and needs to be considered for Quartets.

9

Nexus

The seven-year-old son of Dynasty tries the distance for the first time, but recent results suggest he will be right there at the end.

10

Zapatillas

Talented colt who won the G2 KZN Guineas (1600m) but has yet to prove he can win over further than 1600m. Has his work cut out to place in this line-up.

11

Waterberry Lane

Having his first run for his new stable, which pulled off a massive upset in the G1 King’s Plate (1600m) . Could be a decent outsider.

12

Al Muthana

Now the highest rated horse in South Africa after his surprise G1 King’s Plate (1600m) win but does not have a good record over 2000m.

13

Warrior

He is not well handicapped but if he can get a decent pace could run into the back end of Quartets.

14

Cousin Casey

South Africa’s Champion Two-Year-Old colt last season will have his first run outside his own age group but will enjoy the extra distance and has to be a contender.

15

Rain In Holland

Last season’s Triple Tiara winner is struggling to regain her form and top trainer Sean Tarry will have to work a miracle to see her take the honours in this field.

16

Linebacker

Ran third in last year’s race and performed well when fifth in the G1 King’s Plate (1600m) but will battle to reverse the form with those who finished ahead of him.

17

Rascallion

Came back to his best with a win in the Grade 2 Premier Trophy over 1800m last time but has a lot more to do to be competitive in this race.

18

Gem King

Won the first two legs of the Winter Series last season but failed in the final leg and was rested for six months. Will need to improve if he is to feature.

19

Pomp And Power

All three of his runs this season have been rather disappointing. Will have to make a major improvement to be competitive.
