G2 – 3190m – Turf

1

Coltrane

A really tough stayer who has delivered three wins this season and took the notable scalp of red hot favourite Trueshan at Doncaster last month. An Ascot winner on his only previous visit here. Best on good or a bit softer ground.

2

Quickthorn

Struggled on deep ground last time, but this front-running relentless galloper had been a huge improver previously, gaining three straight victories and completely dominated a G2 at York.

3

Stratum

Surged in the straight to win over a marathon trip at Royal Ascot, repeating his victory of the previous year. This lesser trip and G2 company probably won’t be so suitable.

4

Trawlerman

Has won his last two starts, and a terrific tactical ride – racing wide and alone for some of the trip – saw him defeat 19 rivals in a very valuable York handicap in August. Up in trip. Quick ground would help.

5

Trueshan

This outstanding and reliable stayer – winner of 12 of his 20 starts – has won this event comfortably in the last two years. More excellent performances in 2022. Just below his best when narrowly failing to win a G2 last time. The softer the ground, the better.

6

Wordsworth

Has started favourite for five of his six starts this year, but has won just one of them though not beaten far in a G3 over this course and distance back in April.  Needs strong handling.

7

Eldar Eldarov

On just his fifth career start he won the G1 St Leger, a UK Classic, at Doncaster last month. Had a tough race there, but having had so few starts he could still be fresh for this challenge, and should thrive at this longer trip.

8

Waterville

His two wins have come in handicaps, but he shouldn’t be ignored after delivering an extraordinary performance at The Curragh when weaving his way through a huge field of rivals to win a prestigious event last month.
