Joao Moreira is chasing an unmatched fifth win in Sunday’s (29 May) HK$3.7 million G3 Lion Rock Trophy Handicap (1600m) when he gets the leg-up on Excellent Proposal for trainer John Size at Sha Tin.
Already unrivalled with four wins since the race’s inception in 2016, Moreira will once again take a leading contender into the end-of-season feature race which is named after a famous Hong Kong summit located in the Sha Tin District and overlooks Kowloon.
Excellent Proposal is chasing a first win since his barnstorming triumph in the 2021 HK$12 million Hong Kong Classic Mile (1600m), while last start the Exceed And Excel chestnut finished a fine third in the G1 FWD Champions Mile (1600m) at Sha Tin.
“Very pleased – it (FWD Champions Mile) was a Group 1, a strong race and I was just hoping that he would run a good race, which he did. I think there is a bit more to come from him and it’s nice to have him in a lower grade now because it’s not as a strong as last start,” Moreira said.
The five-year-old defied his 40/1 quote to place behind Golden Sixty and California Spangle, respectively, on FWD Champions Day (24 April) last month.
Last season, the 110-rater collected a hat-trick of wins prior to his Hong Kong Classic Mile score, prevailing over 1400m, 1600m and 1800m – each time under Moreira.
“I’m quite excited to see how he’s going to perform again because it’s a fairly even race but there is no doubt that he is one of the winning chances,” Moreira said.
