G1 – 1600m – Turf

1

Berkshire Shadow

Despite immaturity a powerful finish saw him win a 1200m Royal Ascot G2 on just his second start. Ran well without threatening in a G1 on his final 2021 start. Up in trip but pedigree positive about stamina.

2

Boundless Ocean

From the stable that scored a surprise win in this Classic in 2021. An even bigger surprise if this colt won, as his only success so far has come in maiden company.

3

Checkandchallenge

Has won both his starts – latterly when travelling strongly and accelerating stylishly to win a well contested Listed event at Newcastle in April. On grass now but his trainer sees no reason that it won’t suit.

4

Coroebus

Won two of his three two-year-old starts, latterly when comfortably beating nine rivals in a G3 over this course and distance. Looks a high class prospect for 2022.

5

Dubawi Legend

Led for much of the trip, and, despite racing too freely, ran a cracking second in a 1400m Newmarket G1 last October. Faded disappointingly at Del Mar subsequently.

6

Eydon

Magnificent-looking, he was a beaten hot favourite on the all-weather on his first 2022 start but a different story when switching to turf – and more patient tactics – saw him win easily over 1800m at Newmarket.

7

Light Infantry

Despite showing immaturity each time, he won both his starts last year latterly when surging from the back in a soft-ground G3 at Newbury. The rise to 1600m should be fine.

8

Lusail

Uncomplicated and with a great attitude, according to his trainer. Twice a 1200m G2 winner last year, finishing fast to snatch second in a 1400m Newbury G3 on his 2022 return.

9

Luxembourg

A big colt with a high cruising speed he won all three starts last year, latterly always in control late on when winning a 1600m soft-ground G1 at Doncaster. Could enhance his stable’s fabulous 2000 Guineas record.

10

Native Trail

Last season’s European Champion Juvenile and will surely start favourite, having won all five starts – two at G1 level. Looked well suited to the step up to 1600m when charging clear of his rivals in a G3 over this course and distance this month.

11

Perfect Power

Usually held up, won two 1200m G1’s last season. Returned with another terrific winning display – a G3 – over Newbury’s straight 1400m. Much depends on whether he has the stamina for 1600m.

12

Point Lonsdale

Hasn’t raced further than 1400m so far but his great trainer expects the Guineas trip to suit. Won four of his five two-year-old starts and reportedly has worked stylishly prior to this 2022 return.

13

Royal Patronage

Already has winning credentials over this course and distance – won a fast ground G2 last September. Quick ground here would probably favour him more than many of his rivals.

14

Tacarib Bay

Second in Listed company here this month, and has done nothing wrong in his three career starts – winning and twice placed – except to show that he is good enough for this G1 challenge.

15

The Wizard Of Eye

Only once a winner but this challenger from a small stable has competed at Group level on his last five starts. Not beaten far in a G3 last time, but a huge shock if he won this.
