Extending strong starts to the season, Zac Purton and David Hayes again combined in decisive fashion to figure prominently at Happy Valley on Wednesday (22 September), crowning their haul with Harmony N Blessed’s track-record victory in the Class 3 Clementi Handicap (1000m).
Purton collected a treble, while Hayes notched a double to hold outright leadership of the jockeys’ and trainers’ championships, respectively, after Harmony N Blessed clocked 55.98s to lower Dancing Fighter’s 1000m mark of 56.09s.
The victory also propelled the enigmatic Magnus gelding to equal joint leadership in the HK$1 million DBS x Manulife Million Challenge, the lucrative series involving Class 3 races or above at Happy Valley until 23 February, 2022.
Purton now leads arch-rival Joao Moreira 11-8 in the jockeys’ championship, while Hayes has an 8-6 edge over Danny Shum after six of 88 meetings.
Reigning champion trainer Caspar Fownes also enjoyed a double, bookending the meeting with Fast Pace (Moreira) and Seven Heavens (Luke Ferraris).
Purton, 38, was delighted with Harmony N Blessed’s performance after being pressured by Jerry Chau on Harmony Fire.
“Jerry made me earn it early, we were rolling and he just kept sneaking up underneath me. Obviously, he wanted to make me work, which was to his detriment, but I think it helped my horse because you don’t want to fight him,” four-time champion Purton said.
