G2 – 2831m – Turf

Almost Midnight A progressive stayer who was being pushed along some way out but responded to pressure to win a Thirsk novices’ event last month, his second win from three starts. Takes a severe rise in class but he looks very progressive and steps up to a trip that should suit.
Barbados Not yet proven at this trip and pedigree doesn’t shout out that it will help. But from his formidable stable he’ll get some respect and he does seem to be improving.  He led in a Leopardstown Listed race over 2400m this month, and kept fighting when headed.
Dashing Willoughby Looks to have developed into a smart three-year-old with good efforts at Newbury and Chester. In a G3 at the latter track he led and though fading into 3rd the winner went on to finish a close 5th in the Derby at Epsom. Chances if the rise in distance helps.
Eminent Authority A big horse who won a 2227m maiden on his debut and then finished well without looking like winning when 1.5L 3rd of three in a 2400m Leopardstown Listed race last month, today’s rival Barbados just ahead. This extra trip could well suit nicely.
Harpo Marx A big powerful horse with his great trainer revealing that this race was on his agenda as soon as he had slammed 9 rivals in a soft-ground 2500m maiden at Tipperary earlier this month. Blinkered here.
Jalmoud Will need to prove that he stays this distance, but he has improved race by race and, in and out of the lead in a 2400m Longchamp Listed race last month run at a slow pace, he showed a willing attitude to outbattle his rivals in a tight finish.
Moonlight Spirit Won his first three starts. Was a heavily backed favourite on his handicap debut at Leicester, romping clear of his three rivals and looking to enjoy the fast ground. Taken to Longchamp for a 2400m G3 last month, he ran an okay 3rd on slower ground.
Nate The Great From a stable that have swiftly developed into a formidable operation, and this colt made a fine start to the season when 4L 3rd in a Listed event at Lingfield in May, form massively boosted when the winner went on to land the Derby at Epsom. Some pedigree concerns over this longer trip.
Nayef Road Proved his three-year-old credentials on his 2019 return when leading most of the way in a 2000m handicap at Newmarket last month. Hasn’t improved on that in two starts in strong company since and some doubts as to whether this big jump in trip will suit.
Norway Very well bred but though he has won two of his seven starts he doesn’t seem top class and was put in his place – though not disgraced – when 8th in the Derby at Epsom last time. This extra distance will need to improve him if he’s to win this.
Pythion Hasn’t managed to win since on his debut last July. But he seems progressive and was 2nd to today’s rival Western Australia – leading and fighting hard when challenged – in a 2600m Listed race at Navan last time. Looks strong on stamina.
Themaxwecan The stable have won this three times in the past 10 years. After being well behind the subsequent Epsom Derby winning at Lingfield, he appreciated the faster ground at Doncaster, finishing strongly and just failing in that handicap. Has proven stamina.
Western Australia His sire seems to add plenty of stamina to his offspring and this colt had no difficulty handling the rise to 2600m when winning a fast-ground Listed event at Navan last month. G1-placed last season, he also has class and the stable have a great record in this G2.
