The Hong Kong Jockey Club purchased five colts at the 2018 Arqana Breeze-up Sale in Deauville, France (11-12 May), for a total cost of €870,000 (approximately HK$8.281 million).
The Club’s purchases are athletic youngsters by a mix of proven stallions and exciting young sires.
Among the eye-catching quintet was Lot 161 by Exceed And Excel, a proven source of quality in Hong Kong, thanks most notably to his G1-winning sons Amber Sky and Mr Stunning. This youngster is closely related to G2 Lowther Stakes (1200m) and G2 Queen Mary Stakes (1000m) heroine Best Terms, from the family of the outstanding British mare Time Charter.
Kingman was a brilliant champion miler and the Club went to €180,000 to secure Lot 108, an attractive two-year-old from his first crop. The bay colt is out of a G3-placed mare from a high-class family with an international profile.
Shortly afterwards, Lot 110 fell to the Club, too. The Elusive City youngster is out of a smart and durable nine-time winner from a G1 gene pool – the family has produced the likes of Bobby’s Kitten, Sixties Song, Paradise Creek, Forbidden Apple and David Junior.
The Club secured two further lots for €160,000 each, both being sons of top-class young stallions. Lot 131 is by Olympic Glory, a G1 winner in each of his three racing seasons. The bay is from a top class family that has produced G1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf winner Vale Of York, G1 2,000 Guineas winner King Of Kings and G2 Prince of Wales’s Stakes heroine Batshoof.
Lot 136 is by Noble Mission, a three-time G1 winner and a full-brother to the great Frankel. The bay’s dam is a half-sister to a pair of Listed winners and is herself a granddaughter of the 1990 G2 Prix de l’Opera winner Colour Chart.
