1200m – Turf

1 Count Otto He has won three of his six races, those wins all coming over this distance and usually when racing prominently. Yet to prove himself on turf and was also a shade disappointing on his latest start.
2 Chagatai Excuses for one dismal show last season whilst gelding has clearly done him no harm starting this season with a good winning display over 1200m on the all-weather at Kempton, always close to the pace there. He’s all speed. Handicap debut here.
3 Barton Mills Justified odds-on favouritism with a stylish front-running victory on the Kempton all-weather last September. He tried to repeat dominating tactics over the same 1400m course and distance last month, finishing a good third. He’s the brother of a G1 turf winner.
4 Yafta His figures suggest that he is improving race by race and he’s won his last two starts, one on turf and most recently on his handicap debut over this distance on an all-weather surface. Has a tougher handicap mark now but is developing into a smart sprinter.
5 Tribal Quest Showed plenty of promise on his first two starts last season but then was a disappointing favourite for a maiden event and was subsequently gelded. He made a good start to 2018, winning a minor event at Kempton over this distance. Handicapping now.
6 Prestbury Park Short of room and unlucky not to finish closer in a 1400m handicap here last October. Two respectable runs in handicaps on the all-weather since being gelded but not an obvious winner off his current handicap rating.
7 Ambient Without a win from ten starts and dropping to a sprint distance having raced over as far as 2000m. He did nearly gain a shock 33-1 win -just outbattled late on – in a 1400m maiden over this track last month. He may struggle against some less exposed improvers.
8 Galloway Hills Justified favouritism on his second career start, winning over 1005m on Lingfield’s all-weather track. However his latest start was his best – on his turf debut and with blinkers fitted – he finished strongly for second in a Newmarket handicap after a troubled passage.
9 VJ Day His figures suggest better performances on the all-weather this year than on turf in 2017 though that might be normal improvement. A 1200m Newcastle winner in March, but just ran out of gas late on when trying to lead all the way there last time. Stable in terrific form.
10 Grandfather Tom Hard to tell from his pedigree whether he’ll be as good on turf with all his seven previous starts – including three 1000m wins – being on an all-weather surface. He bounced back from a poor run to finish a close third at Chelmsford last time.
11 Crotchet One of only two in this race that haven’t been seen this year which may be a disadvantage. Two good runs out of three as a two-year-old including when surviving a slow start to win over 1007m on soft ground on her debut, at Nottingham.
12 Wings Of The Rock Has won just one of her eight starts – a 1000m maiden at Nottingham – but she did run in some hot races last year.  Having joined a new stable she made a respectable start to 2018 finishing second of four in an all-weather sprint handicap at Wolverhampton.
