G1 – 1600m – Turf

1

Berkshire Shadow

Winner of both starts this season, with usual prominent tactics adopted. They were strong all-weather events but he’s a past G2 turf winner, who has also finished close up in a G1.

2

Checkandchallenge

Came from the back to win a G3 over this trip at Deauville last season. Couldn’t repeat that on his 2023 return. Will want a strong pace to suit his hold-up style. Others still look preferred.

3

Chindit

Best chances on quick ground for this horse who races in a more relaxed style than previously. Happy over a straight track as he showed with a winning 2023 return, in a Listed event at Ascot.

4

Jadoomi

Won three of his four 2022 starts, including G2s at Goodwood and Leopardstown. Finished lame after a still very good third in a G1 at Ascot in October. Races prominently and loves slow ground.

5

Jumby

Career highlight came here when delivered with a well-timed challenge to win a 1400m G2. Lost valuable ground at the start on his 2023 return. Probably better over shorter. Wants fast ground.

6

Light Infantry

Twice came close to plundering G1s at Deauville last year, despite being an outsider each time. An encouraging return when third at Newmarket this month, and also has past winning Newbury form.

7

Lusail

Capable of some huge runs, coming close to a shock G1 victory at Royal Ascot last year. Very speedy, he really wants a good or quick surface to help him at this trip.

8

Modern Games

Big and strong and capable of terrific acceleration, he has gained four G1 victories in France, the US and Canada, and second in another – at Keeneland last month. Good ground or quicker would be ideal.

9

Mutasaabeq

Winner of G2’s over this trip on his last two starts – helped by the fitting of blinkers – and his front-running Newmarket victory last month – was a clear career best.

10

My Prospero

Quickly developed into a top class colt in 2022, running a mighty race when only narrowly failing to win a Royal Ascot G1, only just beaten in another Ascot G1 in October. High expectations for 2023.

11

The Wizard Of Eye

Did come close to a shock G3 victory – over this trip on fast ground at Goodwood – but tends to look very vulnerable against this exalted level of opposition. No apparent winning chance.

12

Triple Time

Injury has curtailed career but he returned from a year-long break to show how good he could be with a G3 Haydock victory. Struggled when too keen at Longchamp subsequently.

13

Laurel

Reportedly a slow developer but she has now won three of her four starts and walloped her rivals in a 1600m Listed race at Kempton last month. Against colts for the first time, but it’s worth a try.
